My dog cried when I petted him. What should I do until I see a vet?

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | unneutered | 6 years and 10 months old | 70 lbs

Hi! I'm looking for a bit of help. It was cold outside so I let my dog inside, but when I went to pet him he let out a cry. I'm assuming arthritis? My car is broken and I don't have a vet in town. Any suggestions on what I should do until I can get him to a vet's office?

It could be arthritis but it could also be a soft tissue injury or something else entirely. I can't really say much just based on one yelp. Where on his body were you touching when he yelped? His head? Could be an ear problem. His neck or back? Could be a soft tissue injury or arthritis.

I don't suggest you do anything but keep him calm, warm and comfortable. Minimize activity so he doesn't continue to aggravate the situation and just get him to the vet when you can especially if he continues to cry out like he is in pain. Over the counter medications are really not recommended and can cause more problems if you don't know what you are treating.

Did the veterinarian give you any medication to help with pain? If not I would highly encourage you to call tomorrow and request something for pain management. Also, is he limping or holding that leg up? If not then I would be suspicious that something else may be bothering him. Often I find neck or back pain present on dogs who “cry out” for no known reason. Of course many other possibilities exist as well. Why does my dog cry when I touch his rear or struggle with stairs?

This could be from a tail injury, or back pain. Generally with arthritis they don’t cry out in pain. I’d give him a few days to see if this gets better on its own, then if he’s still that painful I recommend a veterinary exam and pain medication. They will feel his back and joints, check his tail for injury and may recommend X-rays to diagnosis the problem. Why is my dog crying and upset when I touch his neck or collar?

I would be very concerned about this level of pain and would recommend an exam by a veterinarian. It could be neurological, a disc problem, a strain in the bones or muscles of the neck or possibly an infection somewhere in that area. The vet may recommend x-rays to get a diagnosis. Please do not give any human pain medication as these can cause serious side effects in animals. It is best to get pain medication that has been prescribed by your veterinarian that is safe for dogs. My old arthritic dog is crying and won't lift his head. What's wrong?

Hi there and thanks for posting. it is hard to say what exactly is the cause without examining Dutch first, but if he is not on any pain medication for the arthritis, he may just be very painful. However, there could also be another issue as well such as fracture, torn ligament, or neurological condition. My 10-year-old dog yelps when touched on back. Is it arthritis?

I would be concerned that Max is suffering from arthritis. Sometimes like with people a patient will act completely normal and than after exercise like a walk be painful. I would recommend restricted activity for 4-5 days and see how he feels. If he is still painful I would take him to a vet for an x-ray of his back and possible starting pain medications. You can try an over the counter glucosamine and chondroitin supplement with helps with joint inflammation and arthritis formation.

Why does my old dog yelp when touched, but seems fine later?

Poor Lily! If she yelps when she is touched in these areas, this is likely a sign that something is painful - even if she doesn't react when you examine her afterwards. She may have a pinched nerve, a herniated or "slipped" disc, or arthritis pain that could be causing her to do this. I would recommend taking her to the vet for an exam when you are able to - he/she can do x-rays if needed to help determine the problem and can also prescribe pain medication for her to help make her more comfortable.

Poor Archer! If this has been going on for longer than a day or two, I would recommend taking him to the vet for an exam as soon as you can. Unfortunately, there are no human over-the-counter pain medications that are safe for dogs, so you will need to get a prescription from your vet for something safe and effective that you can give him. Your vet can do a thorough orthopedic exam and may also take x-rays to help diagnose the problem and get him started on appropriate medication to treat it.
