My dog cries loudly with toys. Is it anxiety or attention-seeking?

I would discuss a long term anti-anxiety medication like prozac with your Vet and maybe xanax, acepromazine or trazadone for special trigger events. You can try to buy some interactive toys to keep him busy or kings that he can push around that dispense his dry food. Also a behaviorist or trainer may be helpful to provide tips on calming him. Sadly due to his underlying condition there may not be a perfect fix for him, just managing it to a point that is tolerable for him and you.

This is common dog behavior. They whine for various reasons and you must look at the rest of the body for clues to what it means. They whine for attention, anxiety or excitement. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.

From your description, if Miel is showing this crying behavior when you aren't around, it can be sign of separation anxiety. She is anxious when you leave and is afraid you may not be coming back. This can be a common problem in dogs. I recommend crating her when you are gone. The crate will provide her a small space where she can feel safe in it when you are gone. You will have to slowly train her to get used to a crate. Start putting her in it when you are home and sitting nearby so she doesn't think you are abandoning her, and slowly increase the time she is in it. She can have toys in the crate, and puzzle toys with treats in it that she has to figure out how to get the treats out. You can put a tablespoon of peanut butter in a Kong toy and freeze it in the freezer overnight, then give it to her in the crate. That will keep her occupied for a while. Finally, you can get a pheromone diffuser called DAP that helps dogs with anxiety and pair that will a DAP pheromone collar that releases pheromones when in contact with his skin. If these methods do not help her, then I recommend having her seen by a vet to discuss the use of anti-anxiety medications. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Crying out could be an indication of anxiety or pain in your dog. This may just be a behavioral issue and your pup cries out to get you attention. If these episodes are consistent and increase in frequency then I would recommend having your puppy checked out to make sure there is nothing causing him pain or discomfort. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Dogs do take time to adjust and this may be something that she just needs some more time to get used to her new surroundings. You are doing everything right. Having all her usual things (bed, toys, etc) is a great idea. Remember that everything around her is new. I would give her another month or so before worrying too much. She will demand more attention in this transition period which is normal and expected. Good luck!
