My dog has a cracked nail and a bump behind it. What's wrong?

It is very difficult to tell from these photos, it is possible that your dog's toe nail became slightly torn/detached from the underlying nail bed and you are seeing the separation here. We can, however, occasionally see nail bed tumors. I would recommend a visit with your vet to better examine the area. If it is a loose toenail they may need to trim it back to make it more comfortable until it grows back in normally. This can be very tough to do at home because often these guys are painful so trimming the nail back can be really difficult without skilled help!

Just like you indicated, this could be due to a foreign body getting stuck in the digit though other things like a deep infection or even a growth cannot be ruled out. It could even be secondary to her licking at it. For this reason, it is important to rule those out. I recommend a visit to your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Hello. In all honesty, all lumps & bumps should be investigated. I can not say with any certainty whether this is a benign or malignant tumor, a cyst or an infection. It really needs a hands on examination, possibly with a small biopsy called a fine needle aspirate, to determine its make-up.
