My dog has a cracked and bent nail causing him pain. What should I do?

I would recommend doing a light bandage wrap of the area using cast padding and an elastic bandage for now. Then in the morning have a professional take a look at it. They will have to cut the nail pretty much all the way down to where it is bent, this will cause some bleeding and mild-moderate temporary discomfort, which they can then apply the appropriate anti-coagulant, typically Quik-stop, to the area and wrap it for a couple of days until the area is no longer painful.. If there is significant swelling of the nail base then they may prescribe anti-inflammatories.

I would suggest a vet visit for Rev. These broken nails can be extremely painful. The vet office may sedate him and/or give pain meds then cut the nail flush to the paw pad. Many of these need a few days of pain medication as well. Be sure not give otc pain medications to dogs.

Poor Scooby. He's hobbling because he is in pain and this nail will need to be removed. This will be quite painful to him, so he will have to be sedated to have it done, which can only be done by a vet. Take him into the vet first thing in the morning to get this done. Do not feed him in the morning so he can safely be sedated.

Unfortunately, it sounds like you really are going to need a vet to help you with this. There are no over-the-counter medications you can give that will be safe and effective for sedating her for something like this - in most cases, injectable sedation is required and the dog must be monitored carefully while she is sedated in case of problems. If the nail has grown into the paw pad, she will also need antibiotics and pain medication for this. You may be able to find a low-cost SPCA clinic that could help, or you could try calling local vet clinics in your area to see if they take payments. Another option would be to apply for Care Credit, which is a payment plan accepted by most veterinarians: www.carecredit.com.

I recommend booking an appointment with a veterinarian to have Lexie’s nail evaluated, as it is likely causing her pain, as indicated by the limping. Pain medications meant for humans can be very dangerous (and even deadly) for dogs, so I do not recommend giving any to your pup without consulting with your vet. Your veterinarian can prescribe safe medication to help with the pain, and can clean and treat the injury to help reduce the risk of infection. In the meantime, I recommend putting an e-collar (cone) on Lexie to help prevent her from licking her paw an reduce the risk of infection. I hope Lexie feels better soon!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Blue! It’s hard to picture what the nail looks like. If he is that lame on the leg the nail should be evaluated. We do cut the nail back if needed. A cracked or torn nail is a constant source of pain. If you want to post a picture I could try to give you a better idea if Blue should go to the Vet. Poor Diva! You can try to gently remove the nail yourself, but if she won't let you or you can't do it, you will have to see a vet.
