Why is my dog suddenly covered in garden clay dust and making a mess?

Hi there and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is true that over bathing may cause dryness and can be irritating to the skin. However, sometimes dogs with skin allergies and bathed very frequently and it actually helps them. So you may need to monitor Bear and see if frequent bathing causes any dryness or redness to his skin. There are several products on the market that are more like dry shampoo or mousse that you could brush through Bear's coat to eliminate some of the dirt and odor. If necessary you can also bathe Bear every one to two weeks, but please do it less frequently if you notice any dryness or redness of the skin related to bathing.

It sounds like something irritated his skin. Do some investigating and see if you can part his hair away and look at his skin for more clues. IF you don't see any irritation, then the culprit was probably not severe enough to cause harm to the skin. You can then try bathing him in an aloe-based or oatmeal-based shampoo to see if this can help calm his skin down and then monitor him for the next few hours for improvement. If hsi irriation worsens or does not resolve, then it is best to get Bix evaluated by your vet for further treatment. I think washing him again with your normal soap and rinsing really well is a great plan! I would definitely do that as soon as possible. I have also has several patients over the years become infested with lice after using self wash stations so look very closely for any small bugs on the skin. Flea and tick topical therapies are usually only effective for 1 Month so I would read the instructions and see if it is time for another application. Also, this is the season we see a lot of allergic skin disease, so if the itching continues I would recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian soon. They get scabies generally from other dogs. He is probably allergic to something in the yard. I recommend bathing him with a hypoallergenic shampoo, and you can give Benadryl to reduce the allergic reaction. There is a section on this website that has information and dosages for common over the counter medications. If the skin isn’t improving in a few days I recommend a veterinary exam and treatment. They may prescribe medication to reduce the rash and itching, and if the skin looks infected oral antibiotics. I would keep him out of the yard until this resolves. I would advise trying an oatmeal bath to calm his skin, or perhaps a soothing gentle baby shampoo. Then try not to bathe him very frequently. Washing him when it is dry or wet does not make much of a difference other than the fact that it will take longer to remove dry mud than it will to remove wet mud. Mud will not damage his fur coat but the longer it sits in the fur the more chances of fur clumping together are likely to occur.

After a bath some of the older skin cells get loose and cause dandruff. Brushing Breaker daily will stimulate the skin and remove the dandruff. The shampoo you used was fine. Dogs itch mostly from allergies. They can be allergic to flea bites, grass, pollen and leaves and also have allergies to food. Breaker would be much itchier with mites and mites are not that common. To keep his skin healthy and reduce inflammation I recommend an omega 3 or fatty acid supplement, in addition feed a high quality dog food. In order to check for mites you need to bring Breaker to your veterinarian and they can look at the skin cells and fur under the microscope. If they do see mites a treatment will be prescribed.
