My dog still coughs after bronchitis antibiotics, is this normal?

The cough can linger for a couple weeks. If he is otherwise acting normal than it may just take a little more time for the cough to resolve. If you notice any lethargy, anorexia, difficulty breathing, or fever than I he should definitely be rechecked.

This does not sound like a typical Kennel cough, which is usually responsive to antibiotics within 3-4 days, and then goes away after stopping medication in about 10 days time. There is something else going on here, which could include any of the following: an underlying heart condition (the heart and lungs are very much involved with each other), laryngeal paralysis (causes coughing in young adult dogs but not as common as other disorders), lung parasite, fungal infection of the lungs. You will have to get some testing done at this point to determine what the underlying cause is so that we know how best to treat Bruno moving forward. It sounds like they had a touch of kennel cough which is like dog flu. What can happen when treating with antibiotics that if the course finishes too soon it can make them better but hasn't completely killed the bugs then it recurs. I would visit your vet as you may need a longer course or different antibiotic.

It is possible that Buddy has residual bronchitis, which sometimes will not go away in older dogs. Treatment for bronchitis is steroid therapy and cough suppressants typically. I also recommend using a humidifier in the room with Buddy as often as possible. Also, I would consider having chest x-rays taken of Buddy to help better determine what the cause of the coughing could be so that the most appropriate treatment can be recommended. There may not be infection present anymore but inflammation or another cause. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Kennel cough is usually a self limiting infection and in 1 to 2 weeks time will completely disappear without any treatment. However sometime an anti inflammatory medication and an antibiotic treatment is indicated (and probably this was your case). Your puppy should gradually improve but if you do not see an improvement in the next 24-36 hrs I recommend a recheck at your veterinarian, earlier if she is getting worse. In the meantime I suggest to use a harness instead of a collar to walk her outside to avoid pushing on the inflamed trachea and make her cough even more. This a very concerning fever your dog had. 15 days of antibiotics should have cleared this upper respiratory infection up. Obviously it has not , so you need to take Bruiser back to the vet for a recheck and more, possibly different type of antibiotics. He may have a foreign body in his upper airways, a tumor, possible sinus infection (bacterial or fungal). Unfortunately distemper also has similar signs (this would be concerning if your dog is not up to date on your vaccinations). I suggest you make an appointment with your vet.

Your puppy could indeed be suffering from an upper respiratory infection such as kennel cough which can last up to 6 weeks. however it should then be treated with possibly another antibiotic (if your vet deems it necessary). Carl could be suffering from a collapsing trachea as well. This is a common condition in small dogs such as pugs. This can be easily diagnosed with an x-ray. You should take Carl back to the veterinarian for a recheck this week.
