Why is my dog coughing white foam after pulling hard on collar?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 66 lbs

Bandit is bringing up white foam repeatedly as though something is in his throat. We cannot see or feel anything there and he is still eating and drinking normally. He was on a lead at my daughter's home due to lack of fencing and he is not used to that and pulled on it when he saw other dogs and I am wondering if he bruised his throat internally? I would go and sit with him to get him to stop pulling ASAP each time. He has not eaten anything abnormal and always in view.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. Pulling hard on the collar may have caused some irritation and lead to the hacking you are seeing. I would recommend switching to a gentle leader collar and avoid placing a collar on him for the next 3 to 5 days. If it continues or worsens I would recommend having a veterinarian examine him so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made.
