Why is my dog coughing white foam after pulling hard on collar?

Heart failure, respiratory infections, collapsing trachea, allergies, etc. Can cause coughing. It best to have a veterinarian examine Aurora to rule out different causes. It sounds like your dog may have a collapsing trachea causing the cough. It would be a good idea to use a harness instead of a collar. Your vet can also prescribe medications to help if the condition persists or becomes more frequent. A bronchodilator and cough suppressant may help.

Hello. Is the hacking constant, accompanied by any retching? This is not good if she is & probably needs to see a vet tonight. If not, are her gums a nice bubble gum pink? This is a good sign. Will she take a little food or water? This too is a good sign. Weigh the signs & see if this might just be some kind of tracheal irritation. Sometimes a teaspoon of honey every couple of hours can be very soothing. See how she does over the next hour or so & if you are at all concerned, it is always best to be safe than sorry, but if she seems pretty comfortable you can see how the honey works for her. Hazel could have tracheal irritation from the collar or prong collar. Some dogs have more sensitive tracheas than others and some dogs have genetically smaller or collapsing tracheas that are predisposed to problems. However, I would also be concerned Hazel may have picked up a bacterial or viral infection that is causing her to cough. I would recommend taking her in to your vet to have them evaluate her lungs and throat to see if she needs any medication or potentially switch her to a harness instead of a collar.

Unfortunately, it's impossible to know the underlying cause of the coughing without a physical exam and possible radiographs. Pets can cough due to allergies, parasites, collapsing trachea, heart disease, lung disease, cancer, infections or something stuck in the throat. Treatment is different for each of these conditions. At home, keep activity and barking minimal. The barking and panting can cause more irritation. A humidifier can help as can an omega 3 fatty acid supplement. These actions may or may not address the underlying cause. I recommend to have Darling examined by his veterinarian today if she has been coughing more than a few days. What you describe sounds a lot like symptoms of canine infectious tracheobronchitis, also known as kennel cough. If she has been exposed to any other dogs, such as groomer, dog park, boarding facility, newly adopted dogs etc within the last 2 Weeks then this would be high on my list of concerns. Kennel cough is often self limiting. However if no exposure known then I would be more Concerned about issues such aspiration pneumonia, object lodged in throat, heart disease, and heart worm. It could be a respiratory infection, it could be a collapsing trachea, it could be kennel cough, or it could be something more serious like heart disease. I'd have her seen by a vet in the morning for this problem. The vet can diagnose what is causing it, and can treat her. I hope this helps!
