Dog coughing, wheezing, collapsing, then recovers. When to worry?

Please have Lola seen by a vet immediately. Pugs as a breed can be predisposed to respiratory issues, and difficulty breathing in a pet dealing with bronchitis could be extremely dangerous. A cough like the one you're describing in a little dog like Lace, I'd be worried about a collapsing trachea or congestive heart failure - both conditions are very common in little dogs and can cause dramatic coughs. Other possibilities would be kennel cough, pneumonia, allergies, and parasites. Hairballs are pretty uncommon in dogs, though bronchitis is possible if this were an allergic issue - but allergic coughs usually start at a younger age. With such dramatic onset, I definitely recommend having Lace seen by a vet, and anticipate they'll take chest x-rays to evaluate what's going on with her heart and lungs. Hope this helps.

Lola needs to see a vet right away. I would be concerned too. She is most likely stretching out like that due to discomfort/pain. Coughing is not normal in cats (every so often is probably OK but not consistent) and usually indicates a underlying problem. Some possibilities: 1. asthma or bronchitis 2. heart disease 3. diaphragmatic hernia 4. cancer 5. parasites (like lungworms or heartworms) Those are the ones I can think of right off the top of my head. I strongly suggest you get her to your vet for an exam as soon as you can. Probably not an emergency but I would do it in the next 24 hours or so. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Coughing can be caused by heart failure. If this is a new symptom after starting meds, or is worsening, it would be best to let the vet treating Lola know so that they can either re-examine her or adjust meds as needed. If she is coughing a lot and is in distress, or is having trouble breathing, seeking emergency care is best.

I think it may be time to consider a specialist. I'm not sure if the vet has done a recent x-ray of Mumchie's chest, but I would be concerned his symptoms could be due to heart disease. That can be common in older dogs. Seeing a specialist may give you some answers. Best of luck.
