Why is my dog coughing and vomiting after taking medication?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! While antibiotics can cause vomiting and nausea, a cough can definitely be due to aspiration pneumonia. However, other conditions unrelated to possible aspiration such as heart disease, infectious pneumonia, or heart worm infection can cause coughing as well and may just be a coincidence. If you are concerned about Chester’s cough, I recommend having him seen by his vet to rule out the conditions above. They can perform bloodwork and x-rays to make a diagnosis and begin the appropriate treatment. I hope this helps and that all is well with Chester!

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am sorry your question was not addressed earlier. This is a perplexing situation. Usually, when we see a drug reaction, it occurs within 30 minutes of administration, especially with injectables. This was most likely a delayed type hypersensitivity reaction & not associated with the food consumed. I hope you have conveyed this information to the veterinarian who gave the medications. I would also inform Brew's regular veterinarian of the reaction & make sure a note is placed in the record that one of the medications, or the combination, can cause a significant allergic reaction in Brew. But I do not think the food contributed to the problem. If he is not feeling/doing better very soon, please have him examined. There are other medications that will mitigate the allergic reaction. Hopefully, Brew will be doing great very soon. Take care.

Coughing can be caused by many different conditions including heart disease, collapsing trachea, infectious tracheitis (kennel cough) and pneumonia (fluid in the lungs). I would be concerned about a bulldog coughing after known vomiting, as they are at a higher risk of aspirating (fluid from the stomach going down the trachea and into the lungs instead of coming out the mouth or back into the stomach). I would recommend having Valentino rechecked, and discuss x-rays with your vet to see if there are signs of aspiration pneumonia. However, if Valentino is only coughing a tiny amount, and is otherwise normal, eating/drinking, playing, running around normally, then he likely doesn't need antibiotics as some aspiration pneumonias are sterile (no bacteria present). If the coughing is continuous, or any continued vomiting, or if Valentino is lethargic, weak, not eating, and not acting himself, or has any signs of trouble breathing, then get him to a vet immediately. Oh my. Poor Buddy! This seems a bit extreme even for a Kennel cough, which is what your vet is treating him for with the Doxycycline. It can take about 48-72 hrs of medication before you see improvement; however, if he is getting worse and seems to be in respiratory distress and difficulty breathing, then he needs to go back to the vet for another look. He may need some diagnostics ran (radiographs of his chest) and/or stronger antibiotics to help him recover faster. I do hope your fur baby feels better soon!

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would need to know the milligrams (mg), how many tablets of each and how often he receives the medications to be 100% sure. But he likely will be fine! If he receives any of these medications twice daily just skip tonight's dose. Even if they are just once a day medications he will likely be fine. Loss of appetite can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Hooch evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics to be performed include thoracic radiographs, abdominal ultrasound and bloodwork. Treatment would be dependent on findings. Good luck and have a good day!

Both doxycycline and prednisone can cause vomiting and diarrhea. I am not sure of the dose that your dog is on but maybe your vet could adjust the dose so he has less gastrointestinal problems. Feeding the medication with a meal can sometimes help with the gastrointestinal side effects so make sure to give with food. Your vet could also prescribe an anti-vomiting medication, probiotic, and GI protectant which may help, too. At this point, If he is just going to vomit the medication than it doesn't make sense to give it. You should wait and see if your vet can prescribe additional medications to help with the vomiting and diarrhea. If the vomiting and diarrhea has stopped, you could try to give one medication at a time with food and see how he does.
