My dog is coughing and gagging, but nothing comes out. What's wrong?

Hello, I am currently worried about my dog as she suddenly started acting a bit strange. She Started what seemed to me like wanting to throw up but nothing happened. It stopped for a little bit then once again she did it and nothing came out. So I'm thinking maybe it's a cough? After doing this she pants a little. She is eating and drinking lots of water. I can assure you she's not bloated, and does wag her tail and get excited. I'd appreciate if I'd get an answer as soon as possible. Thank you

Unfortunately from your description it is not easy to say whether she is trying to vomit/regurgitate or coughing. A consultation would be essential to try to understand that.
I would recommend to take Rosa to your veterinarian for a check up of the signs are not self limiting in the next 24 hours. From what you described it does not seem like an emergency or life threatening condition.

Hello there and thank you for using Pet Coach! With the history you have provided I would suggest getting Bella in to see your regular veterinarian. I am concerned that she may have something systemic causing this problem or that maybe she ate something and it is stuck and unable pass through her GI tract. If she is coughing and then trying to vomit because of excessive coughing, she could be dealing with something respiratory or cardiac as the main problem. I would get her in as soon as you are able to to have blood work and chest x-rays performed in order to help determine what is causing the vomiting / coughing. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Lilo. Some dogs with an upper respiratory tract infection can cough and gag which can look like they are trying to vomit. They can even bring up a white foamy material. Some will have eye and nose discharge as well. On the other hand, if she is retching and having abdominal contractions, but not vomiting this is worrisome, especially if her abdomen appears bloated. My dog is gagging and coughing but not throwing up. What should I do?

It sounds like Maximus may have a respiratory infection such as kennel cough, which often causes coughing and gagging without anything coming up. Or, he could be feeling nauseous and trying to vomit - if his stomach is empty, sometimes this gagging can be non-productive. If he is acting normal otherwise and this problem just started today, you can try withholding food for the rest of the day and offering a small amount of plain boiled chicken and rice this evening to help settle his stomach. If this doesn't help, or if he continues to have repeated episodes of coughing or gagging throughout the day, then I would recommend having him examined by a vet - he/she can determine whether Maximus has a respiratory infection or a stomach problem and get him started on appropriate medication to treat it.
