My dog is choking and gagging but not throwing up. What's wrong?

What you described can be consistent with an upper respiratory tract infection. The dog will commonly cough, gag and may bring up a white foamy material. If she is not getting better, the veterinarian may need to prescribe an antibiotic. If she is not eating/drinking or acting sick, then I recommend that she be seen today. She could be experiencing nausea that is making her retch, gag and lick her lips. Other times these noises can actually be related to an upper respiratory tract infection. It sounds like Maximus may have a respiratory infection such as kennel cough, which often causes coughing and gagging without anything coming up. Or, he could be feeling nauseous and trying to vomit - if his stomach is empty, sometimes this gagging can be non-productive. If he is acting normal otherwise and this problem just started today, you can try withholding food for the rest of the day and offering a small amount of plain boiled chicken and rice this evening to help settle his stomach. If this doesn't help, or if he continues to have repeated episodes of coughing or gagging throughout the day, then I would recommend having him examined by a vet - he/she can determine whether Maximus has a respiratory infection or a stomach problem and get him started on appropriate medication to treat it.

Hello, thank you for your question about Lelo. Dry heaving/retching and producing no vomit can be a sign of a serious life-threatening condition known as GDV (or bloat). I would recommend having Lelo seen by a veterinarian immediately so that they can examine him. Sometimes a loud productive cough like kennel cough can look really similar to vomiting in dogs do that’s one possibility. Tessie also may have retched once due to nausea if she ate something that she shouldn’t. If it doesn’t happen again I wouldn’t worry about it. If she continues or if she begins to vomit or cough I’d recommend seeing your vet.

This could be a sign of an upper respiratory infection such as kennel cough or it could indeed be a gastrointestinal problem. Kennel cough often present as gagging and mucoid discharge. Kennel cough is self limiting and usually goes away by itself within a few weeks and often does not need treatment. Should your dog have a fever or the coughing/gagging get worse or should your dog get lethargic, you need to take her to your veterinarian for an exam. Should your dog indeed vomit, you can try the following: I would fast her for 24 hours and then put her on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to regular food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up the vomiting, or if the vomiting increases, or if your dog gets lethargic, she needs to see a veterinarian for an exam as there may be something more serious such as an infection going on.
