Is my dog's coughing, gagging, and bloody stool an urgent issue?

Coughing in dogs can be caused by pneumonia. upper respiratory infections, heartworm disease, or heart conditions. Bloody diarrhea can be caused by inflammatory bowel disease, viral diseases such as parvovirus, toxin ingestion, or bacterial infections. Sometimes, severe parasitic infections can cause these signs. A vet can perform a physical exam, and will likely need some further diagnostics such as bloodwork and x-rays to determine next steps and treatment. I hope all is well with Iris!

I think it may be time to consider a specialist. I'm not sure if the vet has done a recent x-ray of Mumchie's chest, but I would be concerned his symptoms could be due to heart disease. That can be common in older dogs. Seeing a specialist may give you some answers. Best of luck.

This is a very real concern and you should have him assessed by a vet urgently. Infection, injury, heart and lung disease, parasites, clotting issues and foreign bodies could all be at play. A full physical and possibly chest xrays are recommended immediately

Yes, I would be very concerned if Bruiser gagged up a clot of blood, and I would take him into a vet now. It's not normal for a dog to cough up blood, and he could have a severe respiratory infection, a foreign body, or he could have cancer in his lungs. A vet can do a physical exam, routine blood tests, a urinalysis, and possible x-rays to see that is causing him to gag up blood, and can treat accordingly. Please take him to a vet now.

If she seems to be attempting to vomit without producing more than a little foam and she also seem painful, distressed, or her abdomen looks distended I would recommend seeing an emergency veterinarian right away to rule out GDV or bloat. A productive cough can also look like a dog is attempting to vomit, and can be caused by an upper respiratory infection like kennel cough or allergies. This might not be quite so emergent, although her breed would put her at higher risk for complications.

This is concerning, especially for an older dog to have severe gastrointestinal symptoms. I would first fast her for 12 hrs and then slowly introduce a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese. But then it's best to get her to a vet right away. She needs to have bloodwork analysis done and potentially further testing to determine what her underlying illness is. This could be an upper respiratory infection such as kennel cough , but could also be a sign of heart disease, especially if Chico is an older dog. Another very likely possibility is that Chico has a collapsed trachea. You will need to take Chico to your vet for an exam and x-rays (which will rule out collapsed trachea and lung edema caused by congestive heart failure). Your vet;s exam will also detect any problems with the heart, that may be causing the cough. Please cschedule an appointment with your vet soon.
