My dog is coughing, dry heaving, and lethargic. Should I see a vet?

It sounds as though Vito has been through quite a bit over the past week! It is concerning that he is now lethargic, not eating, and coughing, after being normal for a week after his procedures. My main concern is that he may have developed kennel cough or canine influenza after being in a shelter situation. To answer your question, yes, I do think you should take him to the vet for evaluation. In addition to a physical exam, Vito may need to have chest x-rays taken or blood testing performed. It sounds like Tucker is quite lethargic. I'd keep an eye on him now since he is otherwise acting normal. If this lethargy continues tomorrow and/or he develops other signs such as vomiting, anorexia, congestion, increased coughing, respiratory difficulty, and/or sneezing, then I would take him into the vet. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Pete! Was Pete put on antibiotics when he was seen? Kennel cough is caused by many viral, bacterial or mycoplasma organisms. There is only the ONE vaccine for Bordatella. A lot of dogs sadly get a different bacteria or virus that causes the kennel cough signs. Kennel cough is very goose honkey. Since Pete is lethargic, has a decreased appetite, is pacing at night and is 12 years old he should be rechecked. I would recommend X-rays of his chest. If his heart and lungs look clear then either put him on antibiotics and a cough suppressant if he isn't on anything or change the medications since he isn't improving and is actually getting worse. I worry about older dogs with possible kennel cough. The young and the old have increased risk for kennel cough to progress to pneumonia. I hope this helps and I wish Pete the very best!

Poor Opie! This does not look like bile, bile would be fluid. It may be something he ate. Given his age and that he may be lethargic, I do think it's a good idea to take him into a vet now just to be safe. I hope this helps!

Yes I would recommend you take Toby into your vet for an exam to make sure he doesn't have a upper respiratory infection and rule out other health issues that could be causing his symptoms. I would seek medical attention. Without seeing Riggs in person, there is no way I can say if he's ok or not, nor can I say what is causing his cough. The way you describe the cough does sound concerning, so I do think it's best to get him checked out. I'd take him into the vet this week, give his vet a call in the morning to make him an appointment. Take him in asap if his behavior and/or appetite changes. I hope this helps.

Coughing, especially when accompanied by nasal discharge, can be a sign of an upper respiratory infection. However, it can also be a sign of a lower respiratory issue, such as pneumonia and it is concerning that Honey has some episodes of lethargy, as this indicates that she is not feeling well. I recommend having her seen by a vet as soon as possible to determine what is going on and begin the appropriate treatment. I hope Honey starts feeling better soon!
