My toy chihuahua is coughing and has bloody stool. What's wrong?

Poor guy. It sounds as if Joey has a lot of different things going on here and it is difficult to say for sure what the underlying problem is based on his symptoms. However, coughing in pets after drinking water could be due to him drinking the water too fast or he could have an issue with his larynx or trachea. Laryngeal paralysis and tracheal collapse are two things that come to mind as possible causes for this. However, now that he is refusing to eat and has red bloody stool, I suspect he now has an infection. I would highly recommend taking Joey perhaps to another vet for a second opinion. I would definitely start with bloodwork and x-rays of his chest/throat area to gather vital clues as to what his underlying problem is so that we know best on how to treat him moving forward. Hello. At this age I would be concerned about cancer, but it may also be an infection in one of her anal glands, a parasitic infection, or colitis. This is very concerning and indicates internal bleeding and ulceration and possibly an intussuception where the gut has folded in on itself. She needs emergency veterinary care immediately and at such an age such a severe presentation could become life-threatening

Oh no, poor Pixee! It's very concerning that she is passing feces that have blood in it. If she is pooping a lot, she could have diarrhea. She really needs to see a vet as soon as possible because blood in the feces can have some very serious causes including eating something toxic, a foreign body, trauma to the GI tract, or GI tumors. I would take Pixee into a vet immediately to diagnose the cause of her bloody feces and the vet can discuss treatment options.

Based on what you seeing, having a fecal sample brought in to your veterinarian for analysis would be a great plan. He or she will be able to tell you if there are any intestinal parasites present. This is one of the most common reasons for blood in the stool, and weight loss despite a normal appetite. If you can not get to the veterinarian, treatment with a dewormer and/or drug to kill coccidia might be warranted. These can be obtained at most pet stores or tractor supply.

Good that the full workup last week was normal. Isabella may be straining to pass hard stool, and I'd recommend adding a bit of fiber like pumpkin to her diet, or ask your vet for a stool softener. She may be straining so hard that she is causing bleeding in her little anus area, or her anal glands could have some bloody discharge. If she is eating and drinking and not acting painful this is a good sign that nothing major is going on. I like Royal Canin Fiber diet for these issues as a long-term diet.
