My chihuahua coughed, now has an oozing neck hot spot. What's wrong?

That looks very painful. I would be concerned about a possible insect bite causing that. It looks a little bit swollen for just a normal hotspot. I recommend Shiba be rechecked as soon as possible to ensure is nothing more serious. This is because some bites can cause tissue sloughing and the necrosis as well as issues like bleeding.

If the area is small and she isn't bothered by it you can try washing with a product called Hibiclens (available at most drug stores) and applying a topical antibiotic to the area, but if it isn't improving within a day or two, I would bring her into her vet. Sometimes we need to shave around these areas and sometimes they require stronger medications than are available over the counter.

I am sorry that Ali has a hotspot. I would recommend to give her 1/2 teaspoon of childrens liquid benadryl twice a day to help with the itching. You can use a small amount of hydrocortisone cream twice a day as well. The biggest key is to keep her from licking it so I would recommend to get an e-collar (the lampshade collar) for her to wear. Also, please know there is a good chance these remedies will not help her hot spot heal. If it isn't improving, I would strongly recommend contacting your vet for an exam and likely some oral antibiotics. I hope she starts to feel better soon!

Keep the area on his chin clean and as dry as possible. You can use a plain, unscented baby wipe or pet wipes to clean him up as needed. Place an e-collar (cone) on him to prevent further licking or chewing. Use a diluted Betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) solution to gently clean the hotspots. Dry thoroughly afterwards. If the skin is broken, you may need to see your veterinarian for antibiotics. There can be an allergic component to the hotspots. If Bear has a sensitivity to cottage cheese, it may not be helping. You should discuss allergy testing, hydrolyzed diets, food elimination trials and antihistamine use with your veterinarian. The cough should also be addressed to make sure it is nothing more serious than kennel cough. KC is typically self limiting and usually resolves with or without treatment.

Poor guy. Unfortunately you will need to take him to your vet to get his ear infection treated, since there are no over the counter ear products available for dogs. He also likely has skin allergies which are best treated with allergy medication (i.e. Apoquel) through your vet as well. Until you can get him seen, you can try giving him over the counter pet formulated fish oils, which are a natural anti-inflammatory for the skin, daily to help somewhat. Also you can bathe him with an over the counter pet formulated shampoo that is either aloe based or oatmeal based. Hello, sorry to hear about Zoey. The mass on her back leg looks a little more than something brought on my fleas or allergies. That mass should be sampled by your veterinarian to ensure it is not an aggressive mass. The lesions on her neck, do seem like are most consistent with severe itchiness. Things such as allergies and skin parasites (fleas and mites) can cause this kind of itchiness. Mites are microscopic and you may not be able to see them. In terms of fleas, dogs can develop flea allergy dermatitis, an allergy against flea saliva, and you do not need to see fleas on Zoet for her to have this. Other allergies include environmental allergies and food allergies. Her cough could be associated with the allergies although in smaller dogs like Zoey, you also have to rule out heart disease or a tracheal collapse as the cause for her cough. I think Zoey should be evaluated by her veterinarian to rule out the possibility for flea allergy dermatitis or mites, rule out a maliganant back leg mass, and to check for a heart condition or collapsing trachea for her cough. Hi there and thank you for your post! From the pictures you posted, it looks like Chico may have a hot spot (moist dermatitis) area in front of his prepuce / penis. Some of the area appears to be yellow and this might indicate it is infected. I would get your vet to check this out so that Chico can receive the appropriate treatment. Most likely he will need an oral antibiotic and some topical ointments to treat the area. If he is constantly licking the area, I would get a plastic cone to keep around his head to prevent him from licking the area and making it worse. I hope this helps!
