Dog constipated on Clavamox for anal gland abscess. What should I do?

I usually send home Simplicef for anal gland fistula but Clavamox at an appropriate dose for Lily’s weight would definitely help, especially if you are not able to bring her to the vet right away. It is important to fully express both the ruptured anal gland and the other anal gland to prevent a second fistula on the other side. Ideally the ruptured anal gland should be flushed with a dilute chlorhexidine solution but a sitz is definitely better than not cleaning out the ruptured gland at all. I usually send home an e-collar to prevent licking, antibiotics, a probiotic to prevent antibiotic associated diarrhea, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory for pain such as Rimadyl, and a topical prescription steroid/antibiotic/antifungal ointment to speed up the healing process. Hello, sorry to hear about Cleo. Clindamycin is an antibiotic and can cause nausea, vomiting, a decreased appetite, and diarrhea. You can contact your veterinarian to inform them about her reaction and they may be able to give her anti-nausea medications to control her signs. Hi, and thanks for your question. Mild constipation that lasts no more than two days can usually be resolved at home with increased fiber and hydration. Canned pumpkin (not pie filling, just the straight-up pumpkin) or liquid paraffin can be used, and should work straight away in the following 8 hours from administration. DO NOT TRY to give an enema as it could be dangerous and cause electrolyte imbalances and colon perforation. If constipation lasts more than 24 hours from administration of those or 48 hours in general, a check up at your local vet is required. I am sorry Bam is having some complications. If he is truly constipated I would stop the tramadol. Tramadol can cause constipation in some dogs. Metacam is a anti inflammatory and will help with pain control. You could try to add some fiber like Metamucil to the diet to help with defecation. Hope Bam feels better

Poor Simba. I would talk to your vet about trying a different type of antibiotics as these sound like they are causing an upset tummy. Also, be sure to tell your vet about his loose stool and decreased appetite in case he wants to start him on a probiotic or another medicine. You can try the medicated shampoo but it may take longer to heal and it may not completely heal. Talk to your vet about which shampoo he recommends. Also, talk to your vet about adding in an anti-histamine or other allergy medicines a lot of times allergies is what causes these skin infection. I have included an article about Benadryl below. Anal gland fistulas are usually very painful. I would recommend going back and asking for several days worth of pain medication (do NOT give human ibuprofen or acetominophen as those can be deadly to dogs), and an Elizabethan collar if you don’t already have one one to prevent licking. Feeding just boiled rice and chicken for 2-3 days is an option (unless Mojo has a chicken allergy) to feed a low residue diet that will be less painful to poop out. Good luck!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I'm sorry that Coby isn't feeling well. I recommend following the diet plan that his veterinarian outlined for him. Often, bland foods that are easy to digest are recommended, canned food such as Hills I/D or Proplan EN are often recommended. If he has any more vomitting (especially after medications), straining or is painful/uncomfortable I do recommend having him evaluated or hospitalized overnight. It can take anywhere from 6-20 hours or so for food to move through the digestive tract, a lot depends on what food was ingested. If he has any further signs, additional diagnostics such as an ultrasound or contrast study may be recommended to further rule out GI obstruction or other disease.
