Is cold weather safe for my dog with congestive heart failure?

He is seeking an environment in which he can breathe better. Heart failure patients may have fluid in their lungs and that makes it difficult to breathe. He may need a diuretic or if he is already on one, the dose may need adjusted. If possible, keep a fan going in the house near him, keep the house cool. Congestive heart failure and pneumonia can certainly have very similar symptoms in dogs - breathing hard, coughing, laying around more than normal, etc. Chest x-rays and blood work would normally help to determine which of these problems your dog has, as results of these tests would be different in congestive heart failure vs. pneumonia. Hi and thanks for posting! Managing activity and stress level is very important with cardiac disease patients. Short leashed walks to go to the bathroom and around the block should be okay. I would try and minimize long walks and running. A harness that goes around the chest should be used to minimize pressure on the trachea which could exacerbate her condition. Minimizing stressful situations can be helpful as well. For example, if going to the vet's office is stressful and causes her to collapse, then you may want to consider having a house call visit instead which may be much less stressful for her. Hello. Dogs can control there body temp quite a bit by how much air collects underneath the hair. Even short hairs can trap the air against the skin & keeps your pet warm like when you wear a puffy coat. As long as Rex seems happy outdoors & is not shivering, then he can stay out for quite a bit of time. But if you see shivering or he is pressed up against the house seeking warmth, bring him in. Anytime there is rain, or significant cold winds, especially if the temp outdoors is close to freezing, bring him indoors after just a short time outside. Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach to address your concern. Restricting activity completely is something I only recommend if the dog is severely affected by the heart disease. Regular mild to moderate exercise it actually thought to be beneficial for dogs that have only mild signs or symptoms of heart disease. I think it is ok for you to take Odin on walks and let him run for short periods of time. If you notice he is tired or breathing heavier, stop exercising him and allow him to rest. If he develops signs of severe heart failure, then exercise could potentially push his heart into cardiac arrest and he could pass away from over exercising. I hope this helps! I would always be concerned about the development of a cough in an older dog. Firstly it could be due to an infection, chest infections can be serious. It could be an inflammatory conditiion such as bronchitis or asthma. Of course it could be a heart issue like you say and there is the possibility of masses also. The best plan would be to go to the vet for sn examination, an xray may be needed to get a diagnosis.
