My dog is confused learning "down" command. Treats not working?

I know this is something you want to do at home on your own however, my recommendation is that you should consult a professional dog trainer. If you do training at home without knowing what you are doing you will end up giving him incorrect/mixed signals. That will confuse him and he will end up with bad habits that are difficult to correct. Please consult a professional trainer so that Bruno gets trained correctly from the start. You are teaching him the correct way, it is just going to take time and maybe a little maturity to help with attention span and focus. I would try a different trick like stay to help work on the focus. You could also catch him in the act of laying down and sa the command and govehim a treat and with time he will start to connect the two. Just stay patient. I would recommend using treats to show Blessy what you want, and to reward her when she does what you ask. It has lots of details on training dogs in general, as well as instructions for training specific commands like sit, down, come, etc.

Combine the treat with a hand signal, such as pointing at the floor, and a command ("Linda, down!") Praise her if she starts to, even if she doesn't get all the way down, so she gets the idea that this is what you want. Gradually phase out the treat to every other attempt, then every third, etc. until you do away with it altogether and she drops just on your command and hand signal alone.

It really depends. If you haven't had any success on your own, a basic obedience class with you and Chestnut is a good idea. There, you can both work on the basics together under the supervision of a professional who can help guide you on techniques and get the two of you speaking the same language. Working with treat motivation, and working on the basics such as "look as me", "sit", "down", etc can help you get started with better listening as well.

Consistency is key. I would also use treats and/or a clicker to elk with training. You could also get a training to come in just a couple of times to help pin point what is keeping him from listening. It sounds like he is young and probably has a lot of energy therefore, doesn’t want to listen and sit still. You can also try a calmin chew like composure or composure pro. Keep working on training everyday. I would try to take 10-20 minutes everyday to work on commands without any distractions. Use small chewy training treats so he doesn’t get distracted by the process it takes to chew up a large crunchy treat. I hope this helps.

Sometimes dogs Conan's age start to test their boundaries with their owners. I recommend that you start work again with a trainer who uses positive reinforcement to help reinforce/ teach some basic commands. Conan may be running away because he associates you calling him with you trying to stop him from doing something else that he wants to do, in which case positive reinforcement training can help.
