My dog jumps on people and slips his leash. What collar should I use?

From the perspective of him getting loose a harness could be more secure. I find, however, that this encourages them to pull more. I like the easy walk harnesses the best or even the gentle leaders. I would also recommend some obedience training as they can help you Willy off leash management

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Personally I love the gentle leader muzzle harnesses. It provides owners great control of their dogs. It does take a while to get the dog used to it and they still want to rub their faces on people to get them off. They do that in the exam room with me. I would gradually increase the time you have it on in the house before going on walks and give him treats or peanut butter while he has it on. That way he associates it with good things. I do think so people think it is a muzzle but more and more people know what they are. Personally if it makes your life easier I wouldn't care what some people think. I think people think more highly of the gentle leader than the prong collar. As for walking on a loose leash, it may help with that but it really depends on the dog. Some will take advantage when they know the leash is loose. The best thing to not have a dog pull is to train them to "heel," which is easier to do with the Gentle leader. I hope this helps!

Have you tried a gentle leader or Halti? These go around there nose and mouth and clip behind the ears then connect to the leash below the chin. Whenevere the dog pulls, it puts the pressure on their nose and forces their nose between their front legs so they loos there strength and cannot pull. If that does not help then you need to consult a trainer for one on one sessions and then add group sessions with other people and dogs to hel keep him focused.

I would recommend a Gentle Leader head halter - this is a great tool that makes it much easier for anyone, even a child, to walk a large dog and gives you better physical control to prevent lunging when he sees something exciting. Ideally, it would also be a good idea to work with a good reward-based trainer who can help you teach him better walking skills, so that eventually the head halter won't be needed. I highly recommend you buy a Gentle Leader or Halti Collar to walk him. These are both head collars and when your dog pulls, lunges or jumps it will move his head back towards you which prevents him from pulling you. It will take a little bit of time for him to adjust to walking with this type of collar but it will give you a lot more control. I use one with my own dog and walking is so much nicer!

Using a Gentle Leader will help prevent her from pulling and lunging on the leash. You are going to have to do some training to try and solve this problem. First, you should teach her the "watch me" command so that you can get her attention when you needed. Next you should take her in situations that have very few distractions and use the watch me command when you see something that will possibly distract her. Once she makes progress in those situations, you can gradually increase to busier environments. Hopefully, with some patience and time you can get this problem under control. It would definitely be a good idea to try a front clip harness like a Gentle Leader. The pressure across the chest can help you maintain better control.
