My hyper dog pulls on walks and jumps. How can I calm him down?

I highly recommend you buy a Gentle Leader or Halti Collar to walk him. These are both head collars and when your dog pulls, lunges or jumps it will move his head back towards you which prevents him from pulling you. It will take a little bit of time for him to adjust to walking with this type of collar but it will give you a lot more control. I use one with my own dog and walking is so much nicer!

A lot of dogs don't like the head harness to start, but over time they may become used to it. Try putting it on at home and distracting her with treats. Let her wear just the Halti not attached to the leash when you are at home and can watch her and she can get used to feeling it on her head. I would highly recommend checking out training techniques such as loose-leash walking, and working on sit and look at me commands to help improve focus while out on walks (and decrease pulling). Training tools such as an easy-walk harness and gentle-leader can also help during the training session by gently redirecting your dog's pulling force back to you, preventing them from being able to tug your arm off while you practice good walking behavior. As for the other issues, a basic obedience class together is a good thing to look into as it can help you better learn to communicate and help instill some impulse control with jumping and other behaviors. Working on things such as air-planing treats, not jumping up (by turning and walking away, or having him sit calmly), etc can help with this as well. I certainly understand and sympathize with your situation. I have a young dog. I have a few suggestions for you that have helped me. One thing that people think of first is treats that keep them busy for a longer period of time. This does seem to help. You can use long lasting treats like a Kong filled with peanut butter, yogurt, treats, etc and frozen so it takes longer for him to eat. My dog also really like Bully Sticks which I also freeze to make them last a little longer. Keep him mentally and physically busy during meal times. I love using a feeding balls like a Buster Cube or Tricky Treat ball to feed meals in. It keeps him busy for at least 5-10 minutes at each meal and requires him to work. And speaking of working. I have found that my dog is the most tired after we have done a good round of training. Even if you have done a basic obedience class, I would consider trying an advanced class, a nose work class, a tricks class, etc. And if taking a class isn't an option right now, work on training at home. When he goes on walks, make him sit at each corner before he crosses the street. It sounds simple, but additional mental stimulation can go a long way. Playing with other dogs is a great outlet for energy. If you haven't tried it yet, look into your local dog park or doggy daycare center. I would recommend consulting with a trainer to use your commands so he follows your guidance so you're not relying on your strength to hold him. You could also work on using a gentle leader or a no pull harness/gentle walker which requires less strength to hold your dog. Your concerns are very valid and I would be concerned as well about him getting hit by car or injured by another dog this behavior continues.

I would consider looking into a gentle leader head collar.
