Is chum and biscuits healthy for my 10-week-old large breed puppy?

Especially for large breed puppy is fundamental to provide a complete diet. Good quality commercial diets (Hill's, Royal Canin) are definitively the best choice to make sure you provide all the nutrients Drogo needs. Large breeds can develop orthopedic diseases such as hypertrophic osteodystrophy and panosteitis related to caloric intake, fat and protein. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am not sure I am reading this right but I will try to clarify what I think you mean. Prince should be fed a large breed puppy food. In the States, giant breed is for mastiffs and Great Danes so large breed is perfect for a Rottweiler. Royal Canin makes excellent puppy and dog food. At 5 weeks he can definitely have puppy food as long as he has teeth. You may need to water down the dry food to make it softer for him to chew. These foods are designed for young puppies until about 1 year of age. It has the proper blend of vitamins and minerals to help his body and organs grow. I would continue to feed the Royal Canin. In the States we call biscuits “treats”, so as long as you mean biscuits is food and not treats you should be all set. I hope this helps. Good luck and kisses to Prince!

What you need to focus on in a large breed puppy is the calcium/phosphorus levels. If those are not in balance they can get growth abnormalities in their joints. For growth in large breed puppies, a dog food must (on a dry matter basis) contain: 1.2 to 1.8% calcium 1.0 to 1.6% phosphorus Calcium-to-phosphorus ratio between 1:1 and 1.8:1 The protein and fat percent are not that important. My recommendation is to feed a commercial diet that abides by AAFCO standards (this will be on the label) and just make sure it is for large breed puppies. Don’t use nutritional supplements when feeding your large breed puppy any commercial diet as you will surely upset the balance of minerals. I would not recommend trying to feed a home-cooked diet to a growing large breed puppy like Buddy - this is because nutritional balance is extremely important at this age for proper growth and development. It's extremely difficult to properly balance a home-cooked diet for a growing puppy like this - not as simple as just following a recipe and adding some supplements, I'm afraid. Nutritional imbalances in young puppies can cause severe orthopedic issues later in life such as hip dysplasia, growth plate abnormalities, and other types of joint problems. For this reason, I would strongly recommend feeding a good quality puppy food for large breed puppies - my favorites are Purina Pro Plan and Royal Canin, but there are many options available. Once your dog is fully grown, you can revisit the idea of a home-cooked diet if you wish, since it's much easier to balance this type of diet for an adult dog :)

It is never recommended to give puppies multi vitamins and calcium supplements. This will affect Fang's growth adversely, and it is not needed. A good quality puppy food will provide all the nutrients he needs. I also advise again feeding him Orijen. It's grain free, and vets are seeing a link between dogs developing dilated cardiomyopathy who are on grain free diets. The FDA is now investigating that link. Grain free food is a fad, grains are actually good for dogs. I'd feed him a puppy food from brands such as Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, or Iams. I hope this helps!
