My dog has chronic vomiting, neck bulge, pukes water. What's wrong?

Hello, I am so sorry Brandi has been struggling. Based on the information you provided, I suspect Brandi has megaesophagus which occurs secondary to neoplasia, myasthenia gravis, hypothyroidism or its idiopathic. Independent of the underlying cause, a permanently dilated esophagus carries a poor prognosis and often leads to pneumonia. Some medications such as metoclopramide, cerenia and sildenafil may be helpful. Additionally, you should research a Bailey’s chair which forces the pet to eat in an upright position to prevent choking. I hope this information helps.

Hi you are correct with Czar that his could be megaesophagus (ME) and less likely choking from something stuck in his throat. Choking would be a very acute and violent episode. ME is something that would continue to happen at most meals. There are some other medical reasons for Czar's clinical signs as well like a hiatal hernia (abnormal position of the stomach) and other defects he could have been born with. Regardless it is extremely important that he been seen by his veterinarian for a diagnosis. They can take an X-ray to look for ME, something stuck in the throat, or a congenital defect. Also, the doctor can get him on medication to help with the vomiting/regurgitation. Best of luck with Czar

A distended abdomen can be due to many things. Here is a list of some possibilites: 1. constipation 2. bloat - I agree that after 12 hours this is unlikely 3. abdominal mass/tumor 4. abdominal fluid (ascites) 5. pyometra - infected uterus; common since she is not spayed I would be worried about this even though she seems to be "normal". If it is an "open" pyometra she may not be feeling as ill as if it were "closed". 6. internal parasites (ie: roundworms, hookworms, etc) Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. I suggest you get Nexa to your vet for an exam. Some simple blood testing and a couple x-rays could rule in/out most of the things I have listed above. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

If there is any abdominal enlargement or pain he needs to be assessed by a vet as an emergency - non-productive/white foamy vomit is very concerning in a dog which is eating as it can indicate an obstruction. A pancreatitis blood test may also be required depending on the results of the physical exam

I am sorry to hear about Bongo! I would recommend having him examined by a veterinarian for this issue to determine the underlying cause for the problem. We do worry in young dogs with these symptoms about a condition called megaesophagus, which is where the tube connecting the mouth to the stomach is abnormally wide and can cause food to not fully pass into the stomach and then to be regurgitated back up (often being mistaken for vomiting). We also worry about things like intestinal parasites, and things like dietary sensitivity/intolerance. The vet can examine her and get a detailed history on her symptoms and may recommend testing such as a fecal exam to check for parasites and x-ray to check for stomach or esophagus abnormalities.

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I'm so sorry to hear about Sadie. This sounds very serious. Anytime there is fluid in a body cavity, the situation is serious. I would need to know more to give a better answer but in a German Shepherd dog of this age, one thing is likely and that is a tumor of the spleen. These are called hemangioma or hemangiosarcoma or it could even be a hematoma or benign growth on the spleen that is bleeding. These are usually a surgical emergency especially if they are bleeding into the abdomen. Depending on what type of Other reasons for fluid to accumulate in the belly would be heart disease, liver disease, other tumors or masses in the abdomen, kidney problems. A tap of the abdomen (abdominocentesis) would reveal what the fluid is and maybe how to proceed. I would advise taking Sadie back to your vet or taking her somewhere else for a second opinion if you want to try to do something with her. And I would advise this as soon as you can get her there. Not sure if surgery is an option and that would depend on her condition and what you do comfortably afford for her. I'm so sorry again and I really hope that she gets better very soon.
