My dog has a chronic cough. Is Benzonatate safe or recommended?

This medication is sometimes used in dogs for chronic cough. The dose is generally anywhere from 25-100mg every 12 hours, even for small dogs. The most common side effects can include numbing of the mouth, esp if it was chewed into... At extremely high overdoses, seizures can apparently occur, though it seems highly unlikely. Monitor her for any signs of illness, including acting like the mouth is numb, difficulty eating or swallowing, changes in personality, agitation, tremors, or seizures. I'd also skip dinner tonight in case there is a problem with numbing of the mouth or tongue. If you don't have any problems by tomorrow, she should be fine.

Robitussin DM can be used in dogs however you should contact your veterinarian for a safe dose. This medication is not approved for use in dogs but has been used "off label" to treat mild, dry cough. Caution should be used if given with Benadryl as excessive sedation can result. Again, contact your veterinarian before treating. Your dog may need an exam to diagnose the underlying cause.

Hi there. It would be best for you to take Coco to your vet for an exam if she is coughing. Coughing could be due to parasites, viruses, bacteria, fungus, asthma, etc. When you treat with cough syrup you are only placating the symptoms, not treating the underlying disease process. That being said, you can give Bisolvan but I would not use Linctus. You should use Bisolvan Chesty. The active ingredient is bromhexine - the Linctus has another ingredient (orciprenaline) which is a bronchodilator and that could cause the excessive panting you are seeing. Those bronchodilators really increase heart rate and respiratory rate and can be unsafe unless used properly. At 4 pounds it is likely she was overdosed. So, if you are going to use Bisolvan, use the Chesty variety. The dose is 2mg/kg twice a day - she could have about 4 mg. That equals about 5ml of Chesty syrup or 1 TEASPOON which she can take twice a day. Again, it is best to take her to your vet to figure out why she is coughing. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

It is helpful in conditions such as kennel cough when severe coughing is affecting ability to eat/drink, and in cases of collapsing trachea (very uncommon in large breed dogs). Coughing for other reasons including heart disease, pneumonia, or infections in the lungs, can be made much worse by using this medication as it prevents the stuff from being coughed out that needs to come out. I would recommend consulting with a vet about Duke's condition before using this product. Best of luck with Duke.
