Is it safe to give my dog human Benadryl and Robitussin for cough?

Can an adult dog have 25 mg of benadryl with 2 tsp of robotussin?

Robitussin DM can be used in dogs however you should contact your veterinarian for a safe dose. This medication is not approved for use in dogs but has been used "off label" to treat mild, dry cough.
Caution should be used if given with Benadryl as excessive sedation can result. Again, contact your veterinarian before treating. Your dog may need an exam to diagnose the underlying cause.

No, I would not give this medication to your dog unless specifically prescribed by your vet. You could accidentally do harm to your dog by giving to him. In addition, it is illegal for the experts to say if a medication is safe to use on your dog. That's because doing so requires a veterinary client patient relationship which cannot be achieved via an internet forum. I would speak to your vet about giving your dog these medications.

These drugs may act somewhat synergistically and cause some sedation when given together. I do not believe they are contraindicated with one another, but I would use them very cautiously and in low doses. Robitussin is not generally something I tell people to use for their dogs at home.

Unfortunately, by law it is illegal for the experts at Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to give the dose information for any drug, including OTC drugs, without seeing the animal in person first. That's because doing so requires a veterinary client patient relationship which cannot be achieved via an internet forum. In addition, the experts cannot say for certain if a specific drug is safe for your dog. I would not give this to Waldo unless prescribed for him by your vet, and under their supervision. You can discuss with your vet if this is safe to give him, and they can give you the dose information.

My dog is coughing. Is Robitussin safe to give him for his cough?

I would not recommend giving Mocha Robitussin total cough, cold and flu extra strength. It contains pseudoephedrine and acetominophen which can both be toxic in dogs if not used very carefully (and Mocha is a small guy). I wish I could give you a good recommendation for an over the counter medication, but the safest cough medications for dogs are only available by prescription. I would recommend contacting your vet about Mocha's cough and see what they would recommend for him. Coughing can be caused by anything from irritation to a virus to something much more severe, so I would make sure to keep your vet in the loop and have Mocha evaluated right away if he seems to get worse or not feel well. My small dog has a chronic dry cough. Is Robitussin safe for dogs?

Poor Teddy! The most common cause of a chronic cough in a papillion is due to a collapsing trachea. Sometimes products like Robitussin can help, but there are other causes of coughing - specifically heart disease or bronchitis that should be ruled out by having a chest xray performed. Legally I cannot give dosing information for Robitussin to you unless I have performed a physical exam on Teddy. There are better medication options if his vet does confirm a collapsing trachea is the cause of his cough.

This could be allergy related and if so, Benadryl may help. See link below. Unfortunately there aren't any other great OTC meds to help with a cough. You can give Robitussin in small doses but since I do not know Rusty's medical history, I cannot say for sure whether it would be safe for him. I would call your vet and get the proper dose for him if the cough is excessive. If he isn't improving or worsens, I would try to get in to see your vet when you can. Is Robitussin DM safe for my senior dog with lung issues and cough?

Hello, and thank you for your question. I'm sorry to hear that Fluffy is having coughing issues. I think you are asking about Robitussin DM? This is a human product that is designed for cough related to colds. Unfortunately it will have no effectiveness against fluid build up in the lungs, and it is also not tested and deemed safe for dogs. As a result I cannot recommend it. If Fluffy's cough is worsening even on the fluid pill (diuretic), I would recommend taking her back to your vet who can adjust the dose of the pill, and/or provide another medication that can help provide some relief. If the cough has suddenly worsened, it would also be worth having your vet investigate for any new causes for the cough, such as infection, masses, or chronic inflammation, or worsening heart disease. We do not normally recommend a cough suppressant over the counter for coughing in dogs without first examining the pet as there are some cases where a cough suppressant would be contraindicated. If your dog is coughing, I would definitely recommend an examination by a veterinarian as there can be many different causes for the cough, including infectious disease, anatomical abnormalities like collapsing trachea, heart failure, heartworm infection, and more. We need to try to determine the underlying cause of the cough before we can properly treat the cough.
