My dog chews hair on his legs and pulls it out. How can I stop him?

Dogs who have neurologic pain to their appendages or if they have a numb type sensation will often cause themselves extreme self trauma. I would highly encourage you to discuss using the medication Gabapentin with your veterinarian. This can be really good for neurologic pain/sensations. Place an e-collar (cone) on him to prevent further licking. Consider an exam with your veterinarian to diagnose and treat the underlying cause. Possibilities include parasites (fleas, mites), infection (bacterial or fungal) and allergies (environmental, foodborne, etc). Discuss allergy testing, hydrolyzed diets, food elimination trials and antihistamine use with your veterinarian.

The most likely cause would be a skin condition of some kind, causing her to be itchy - some common possibilities would include allergies, fleas, a bacterial or fungal skin infection, or skin mites (mange). Treatment will depend on what the cause is, so I would recommend having her examined by a vet - he/she can do a simple test called a skin scrape if needed to help diagnose the problem. In the meantime, I would suggest getting her an e-collar (plastic cone) to keep her from continuing to chew at her leg and make things worse until you can get her in to see a vet.

When a dog chews on a joint or a leg, there is usually either an itch, irritation or pain involved. If you are doing flea and tick prevention, you can pretty much rule out a flea problem. This is likely pointing to either joint pain or possibly an active mass irritating your dog. Unfortunately it is not possible to see a lot on the photo, other than that your dog has been chewing on his leg for a while. I suggest you make an appointment with your vet for an exam. He will likely want to shave the area so he can examine the skin properly and palpate the bone and other structures. depending on the findings, he may also want to do an xray to see if there is bone or joint involvement.

Poor Bowie. There could be several things going on from localized demodectic mange, a local yeast infection, ring worm, a bacterial infection, anxiety and much more. I would strongly recommend to have your vet take a look at him so they can determine the cause and start him on the proper meds to help. In the meantime, you could try some Benadryl to see if it helps. I would also put a cone collar on him to prevent any further damage to the leg. This is probably due to a severe allergy, although it could also be fleas or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat him with a high quality flea treatment (e.g. advocate or advantage), then get him to the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might revile an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try discovering the cause of the allergy. Some medications can be given by the vet in order to stop the chewing and repair the skin lesions (steroids and antibiotics). simultaneously you should start him on a prescription hypoallergenic diet for at least 2 months. Hopefully you will see some results after all this, if not you and your vet should consider putting him on a long term allergy treatment (Atopica or Apoquel).
