My dog keeps chewing his inflamed leg wound. Why isn't it healing?

Almost 2 months ago, and after having been walked in the hours prior, my dog began chewing the top of his leg very intently. It was inflamed and became weepy as he had chewed it. He has now finally had his cone taken off and the leg looked like it was clearing. However it has clearly still been bothering him, and after he had another nibble at it and the fur was moved, I noticed that he has what look like 2 bites very close together where the original wound was. What could this be?!

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to see that T is having this problem. A few things are possible here. I am assuming that the original wound never healed, only got better. If that's the case then I would suspect either a foreign body has entered the leg or an insect/spider/other has bitten him that started the entire problem. Puncture wounds can look very different over time so it may have been only one small puncture wound from the inciting event. I would advise taking T back to your veterinarian so they can recheck the wound and possibly rethink what is going on. (Assuming they saw it initially) after it first happened. They may want to culture the wound and run a sensitivity of the bugs that grow out of the culture to determine what antibiotics would be best. They may also advise some x-rays to determine if a foreign body has entered the leg although this can be of questionable value depending what the foreign body could be. Exploring the wound might be another option. All of these can be discussed with your veterinarian and I have made some assumptions here and could be wrong. It looks like this could be some sort of insect bite or trauma. This was probably the cause of the excessive chewing and now there is severe inflammation because of it.

T will most likely need antibiotics to help clear up the area and possibly something to help with the itch like a course of steroids. This will help the itch as well as the inflammation.

I would recommend taking T in to see your vet so you can begin treatment. The area may need to clipped and cleaned as well. Try and keep the cone on T for now so he doesnt cause any more trauma to his leg.

Hi and thanks for posting! You can try washing the area with soap and water a couple times a day and keeping it as clean and dry as possible. It looks like Bear has been licking the area frequently which may be a reason why it is not healing as easily, so I would try and keep an E-Collar on her to prevent her from licking and bothering the lesion. Certainly, if despite your best efforts it is not healing properly or is worsening, Bear should see his veterinarian to have the lesion evaluated. Dog's chronic knee wound not healing with antibiotics. Is there a better treatment?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am afraid that this wound may take more local therapy for it to really heal. This means local cleaning, debridement and potentially closing it with stitches. At the same time, I think antibiotics at this point should be chosen based on a culture to be more specific in terms of what is being used specifically targeting the infectious organism. If treated appropriately, this is likely going to heal well. Good luck!

My dog licked his leg wound; now it's bubbling and fizzing. Help!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is likely infected. I think it would be best to have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check the extent of the wounds and see what would be best to treat them. What you can do in the meantime is use an e-collar in the to prevent further injury. How to treat my dog's smelly, unhealing leg wound at home?

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). Ideally a check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. The area must be clipped more and disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths (twice daily). Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking (if any). My dog's leg wound won't heal after months, even with a cone. Help!

Oh my, this is a large wound for Ruger! Treatment and prognosis for this type of lesion will be dependent upon the initial cause (i.e. burns, cancer, ringworm infection, bacterial infection from a skin infection, etc.). Ideally, I do recommend taking him to the vet to determine if the wound has become infected so that appropriate treatment can be started. Topical sprays, such as Vetericyn, can be helpful with many cases of wound healing, but do not start any of these treatments without first consulting Ruger's vet. I hope that all goes well!

My dog's leg wound is decaying with worms. What should I do now?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Bujji! It is very hard to see the wound, but in the last picture it looks more like a mass involving his left foot. He should be using an E-collar to prevent licking and be kept indoors to prevent flies from landing on the wound resulting in maggots. Bujji needs to be seen by a Vet to see if that is a mass on the foot or if the foot is broken. The only thing I can recommend is the above plus cleaning the wound twice daily with water and soap and applying mupirocin ointment after each cleaning. He needs oral antibiotics and pain medications. We can not prescribe medications legally because the law requires a valid Veterinary Client Patient Relationship. In order to have that we need to be able to examine him in person. I wish Bujji the best!
