My dog chews her back, hair falling out & scabbing. What to do?

Poor Buddy! It sounds like this area is itchy for him. If he isn't up to date on his [flea treatment](https://www.petcoach.co/article/how-do-i-pick-the-right-flea-and-tick-product-for-my-pet/), he will need a spot on treatment, such as Advantix, or a prescription oral flea preventive, such as Bravecto, Nexgard, Simparica, or Credelio. You will need to disinfect the environment as well. If he is up to date on his flea treatment, I recommend taking him into your vet for an exam. Your vet can do blood tests, skin scrapings, and use a Wood's lamp to diagnose allergies, mites, and ringworm. Once the cause of the itching is found, your vet can prescribe the appropriate treatment. I recommend taking him into the vet today or tomorrow. There are many reasons Lillie could be chewing including parasites, allergies (both environmental and food), and thyroid issues. At home you can stop the chewing by making her wear an Elizabethan collar at all times. Go ahead and treat her for fleas once a month for at least 2 months. If you want an over the counter product, pick Frontline but there are better products out there like Cheristan or Comfortis. Regarding any wounds, you can cleanse them using hand soap (rinse well) and then apply a little coconut oil- rub it in well and do not allow her to lick it. Poor girl. This looks highly suspicious for a mite issue (Demodexx). This could also just be a really bad allergy. I would highly recommend taking Beretta to your vet to have her skin tested. The vet needs to do a skin scrape to confirm if this is a mite problem first. If so, then you do have some reasonable options for treatment. Treatment for mites nowadays can come in the form of a flea preventative such as Simparica, Nexgard, or Bravecto. These all treat for demodexx mites given once every 30 days. These are prescriptoin only medications. It also looks like Beretta has a secondary bacterial infection on her skin. You will need to have your vet put her on a short course of antibiotics to clear this up. Until you can get her seen, it is best to get her started on a good topical shampoo. My top pick here for something that doesn't require a prescription is Duoxo calm shampoo available online. Also daily pet fish oils are best for pets with skin allergies since they are a natural anti-inflammatory. I can definitely see the small scabs and hairless on Peanut's back - those must be so uncomfortable. It can be frustrating to watch her scratch constantly and not have anything help. While the remedies you tried may help to decrease the symptoms, they do not provide a cure for what is actually causing Peanut to itch. I recommend that Peanut sees a vet who can figure out the underlying cause. Things like mites buried deep in the skin (which are not treated with flea sprays), food allergies, and chronic bacterial/fungal infections can be causing her issues. Your vet can take a sample from the skin to determine what is going on, as well as run some blood work to rule out underlying hormonal imbalances.

It sounds like Vexa has either a hot spot or fleas. You must make sure to protect the area from chewing as this will only make it worse. Have her wear an Elizabethan collar at all times. You should wash the area daily and rinse it well. You can also apply a dab coconut oil to the lesion twice daily. If this does not start to improve within a few days, have her seen. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Paris! Medicated shampoos may work for a skin infection but rarely fix the problem by themselves. If she doesn't have an infection a medicated shampoo will likely not help at all. I would be sure Paris is on a good flea medication (the back is a common location for fleas). I like the oral formulations like Nexgard, Bravecto, Simparica or the Seresto collar. Otherwise Paris may have allergies and need to have her diet changed (chicken is the biggest allergen in dogs with food allergies), something to control the scratching (apoquel, antihistamines) and medications to get rid of an infection if present. Since the shampoos has failed, I would have Paris seen by your Vet for an exam, if she is constantly scratching and biting she is uncomfortable! I hope this helps and I wish Paris the very best!
