My dog ate cat food, has diarrhea & vomiting. Can I give Pepcid?

Hello, my dog was given cat food with chicken broth around 6-630 am est yesterday. She has now devolped the runs with a little bit of throwing up. I gave her a pepcid tab 30mg she is around 55 pounds. Was that okay to give and will my dog be okay?

That is the higher end of the dose for Pepcid and shouldn't harm her. Pepcid is just an acid reducer and may help with the vomiting/nausea. Ice likely has gastro-intestinal upset from eating cat food. A lot of dogs can develop vomiting and diarrhea from eating cat food, especially if they have a sensitive stomach. Ice appears to not be able to tolerate sudden food changes.

I recommend fasting Ice for 12-24 hours. With hold water for 6 hours from the last vomiting. If there is no vomiting for 6 hours offer small amounts of water and ice chips. If she holds that down and doesn't vomit start feeding her a bland diet after the 12-24 hour fast. Feed boiled chicken or hamburger, about 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 normal stools. If she continues to vomit while fasted or when water or food is introduced then she should see your Vet.

My dog chewed stained wood, now vomiting and has diarrhea. What to do?

1. Give ONE dose of famotidine (Pepcid) by mouth. They usually come in 10mg tablets. Give 1/2 tablet. 2. Wait 30 minutes and then feed one piece of bread. 3. No more food for at least 6 hours. Have water available at all times. If no more vomiting after 6 hours then go back to feeding as normal. The diarrhea should resolve on it's own in a day or so. If not, you can start him on a probiotic. One made for dogs; no human products. You can buy them at any large pet store like Petco. If the vomiting persists at any time he should see a vet ASAP.

My dog ate trash, vomited & had diarrhea. Can I give Pepcid or Pepto?

The dosage for Pepto in dogs is one teaspoon per ten pounds, so 1.5 teaspoons would work. I recommend getting a crate and putting him in it when no one is home to prevent him from getting into the trash when left supervised. Alternatively, you can shut him in a bathroom or other small room, just be sure there isn't anything in there he can reach and eat.

Why is my dog vomiting white foam and distressed after eating?

Hi there. If she seems to be doing better now and the vomiting has resolved, it should be fine to continue with the current plan of giving her small amounts of i/d for the next 2-3 days before gradually switching back to her regular diet. If she's still vomiting despite the Pepcid and bland diet, then I would say she definitely needs a vet visit at this point to determine what is causing her symptoms. She may have an intestinal obstruction, pancreatitis, or some type of systemic illness like liver or kidney disease. Your veterinarian can do blood work and x-rays if needed to help diagnose the problem and get her started on appropriate treatment depending on what is found.

Why is my dog throwing up bile and smacking lips after Pepcid?

Smacking her lips could be a sign of a dental problem or nausea. Diarrhea and throwing up can be caused by a food sensitivity, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, an intestinal blockage, bacterial infection, viral infection, the weather, food change, stress, etc. I would fast Kiwi for 24 hours and then put her on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to regular food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up the diarrhea or if the vomiting increases, or if your dog gets lethargic, she needs to see a veterinarian for an exam as there may be something more serious such as an infection going on.

My dog has stomach issues, diarrhea, and is throwing up. Help!

Hello, I am sorry for your concerns for Mochi. We often recommend pumpkin to add more bulk or fiber to the diet, so I do not think it will help much in this case. You can try giving her some famotidine ( Pepcid ), 5 mg every 12 hours for a few days to see if this does not settle things down. Keep her on the bland diet of boiled chicken & white rice ( 25% chicken, 75% rice ), or a little low fat cottage cheese for a few more days, as well. Feed small, but frequent meals. Adding a probiotic cannot hurt. I like Proviable or Forti Flora. If she does not straighten out in a short time, or she starts vomiting, please see your veterinarian as soon as possible. Thank you.
