My dog chewed a pothos plant. Is it toxic? What should I do?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center. Pothos plant can cause significant irritation to the mouth, esophagus and stomach. If Mooch has just eaten the leaf (in the last 30-60 min), you should rinse his mouth with water or offer him plenty of water to drink. If he is asymptomatic, you should monitor him at home. If he does not develop any worrying symptoms in the next 2-3hrs, it will mean that is fine. However, if you notice that Mooch is drooling, vomiting or finds it difficult to eat, you should take him to your local vets right away

That looks like a Philodendron and it is toxic to cats and dogs. It is not life threatening. This plant contains tiny little crystals in the leaves called Calcium oxalate crystals. When the keaves are chewed, the plant can cause drooling, mouth pain, inappetance, vomiting and pawing at the mouth. Sometimes swelling of the oral tissue can occur. It is best to keep this plant out of the reach of your cats. If that is not possible, remove it from the house.

Mistletoe is toxic to dogs (and cats as well) and can cause some potentially serious effects. Like poinsettias, mistletoe can cause irritation to the gastrointestinal tract, which can result in vomiting, diarrhea, drooling and abdominal pain. Less common side effects can cause a drop in blood pressure, seizures, ataxia (abnormal, wobbly gait) or even death. Since your dog ingested mistletoe, you should contact both your veterinarian and an animal poison control center, such as the [Pet Poison Helpline](https://www.petpoisonhelpline.com/).

Some types of lillies can be very toxic to cats and some lillies are mildly toxic to dogs and cats. Peace lillies are considered toxic plants, but it is because they have crystals of calcium oxalate that can irritate the mouth and GI tract. So, it is possible that Gus could have drooling or irritation of his mouth. I am unable to find a plant called philadrium and assume you meant philodendron. This plant contains calcium oxalate crystals that can cause irritation to the mouth and stomach if ingested. A dead leaf probably has little calcium oxalate and the risk for toxicity would be low. If Molly's mouth seems irritated, or if she's drooling or she vomits I'd recommend seeing a veterinarian. If you were talking about a different plant you can repost your question with the scientific name (Genus and species).

English Ivy may cause stomach upset if ingested in small amounts. Larger quantities may disrupt cardiac and neurological function. Coleus can be dangerous due to the essential oil it produces. Even light contact with it may cause skin irritation in pets. If licked, it can cause irritation in the mouth and GI tract. Monitor for lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, ataxia (wobbly gait), dilated pupils, low blood pressure and low heart rate. Seek veterinary attention immediately if any of these symptoms occur.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be due to ingesting the plant as sometimes this causes vomiting. Sometimes it can result in inflammation of the mouth. Unfortunately, Bella really needs to see a veterinarian to at least be examined and treated symptomatically. That many episodes of vomiting can result in severe dehydration which is quite serious.
