What do Chem 24, CBC, and thyroid blood tests tell about my pet?

That will depend on the lab offering the test. T4 checks thyroid function, Urinalysis (UA) checks for blood, white blood cells, specific gravity, bilirubin, glucose, protein, ketones, and urobilinogen, the results of all of these can tell whether kidneys, and liver are working properly and whether there may be a problem with your dog's metabolism. Liver and kidney values (ALT, Alk Phos, GGT, BUN, Creatinine) are on Chemistry panels which can be ordered separately from Complete Blood Counts that measure neutrophil counts (elevated with infection), hematocrit (a measure of hydration status), platelet levels (an indicator of clotting function). I recommend asking your vet for pricing for just the Chem panel vs pricing for a CBC/Chem panel if desired. Good luck!

Hello! Thank you for your question. Whether or not the lab results included more values depends on what exact laboratory test was ordered. There are a variety of tests out there and they all vary in what values they test for. Some only test for a small handful of values, others are more extensive. I would call your veterinarian and request a copy of Trixie's blood work and also talk to the vet about the blood work that was run. That way you may better understand what was included and if additional testing is needed or desired for Trixie.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The liver function tests commonly available in a routine chemistry panel are glucose, albumin, cholesterol and BUN. A more specific, though separate test of liver function is bile acids which is the gold standard as far as liver function goes. Good luck!

The cost depends on your area and if your vet wants to run a full panel to check all the chemistries and organ functions or if they want to just check the thyroid levels. Call you vet and ask what the cost would be. If it is the first time, the vet will probably want a complete panel and these generally run $100-150. These are helpful because it gives a good baseline to compare future blood results against and can give indications of early kidney or liver disease, diabetes, and is a good indicator of overall health.

I would ask Bella's vet what tests they specifically run but many veterinary clinics have inhouse blood machines that can check a complete blood count (white cell counts, red cell counts, hematocrit) and chemistry values to can help assess liver and kidney function, as well as blood glucose, etc. in some cases urinalysis may also be run. With the in house machines results are typically available in under an hour. There are a variety of tests and panels that may be used as general health screening and/or preanesthetic screening. Please talk with Bella's vet about any concerns you may have. I'm sure they want you to be comfortable about any procedures being performed.

It's difficult to interpret lab work without some information on what symptoms the pet is having, why the test was run, etc. Without more information, all I can really say is that this CBC shows an elevated red blood cell count, which may indicate that the pet is dehydrated or can be a variation of normal in some pets. The white blood cell counts are mildly decreased, which can indicate some type of infection or, again, may not have any particular clinical significance.
