My dog has tummy issues from carrots. How many are too many?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 3 years and 2 months old

My dog loves carrots, & my family loves to feed her carrots. I know raw carrots can be tough on a dog’s digestion and I have noticed tummy issues in the last few days. I put her on a soft rice diet, but I still notice orange bits in her poop. How much is too many carrots? We give 1-3 nickel size pieces almost every day. What are other low cal healthy treats?

I don’t think that is too many carrots. Pets can get soft stool for many reasons. It’s likely to do you always see the orange bits in her feces if you are feeding her the carrots as she may not break those down as well. That is generally not anything to be worried about. You could feed her boiled white meat chicken and boiled white rice for 24 to 48 hours. If she does not respond or she gets worse, then I recommend she see her veterinarian.
Other low-calorie options are green beans, peas and cauliflower. They also make a variety of dog treats that are low-calorie but you must look at the label. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions!
