My dog hates car rides. Should I give him a sedative for travel?

Hello. There is a medication called Cerenia that is designed specifically for motion sickness. In addition, a very small dose of acepromazine may calm your pet for the duration of the trip. Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It sounds like Ginger is experiencing anxiety with a bit of nausea in the car. I would recommend using a medication that is geared more towards preventing nausea. Benadryl is a hit or miss and most of the time, I find, does not help with motion sickness. I would have a veterinarian examine Ginger and write a prescription for Cerenia. This is an anti-nausea medication but at higher doses, works well at preventing motion sickness. I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! yes they are fine. I would recommend trying them out first on an experimental car ride to be sure they work well enough. Sometimes the over the counter calming treats don't work as well as we want them too. If the experimental trip fails then I would discuss sedatives with your Vet. This is a prescription drug so he will have to get it through his veterinarian. It's great for motion sickness, nausea, and vomiting. The key is starting the Cerenia one day prior to travel and continuing it throughout the trip. Good luck with Leo

I do not recommend giving human sleeping pills to Jammy. VetriScience Composure once daily calming chews are often very effective in treating anxiety in dogs and do not require a prescription. They are available on PetCo.com and Chewy. com. If they do not adequately calm your pet 30 min after dosing, I recommend making an appointment with your vet re: prescription sedative options including trazadone. Good luck!

Benadryl is generally quite safe for dogs so it's unlikely that this would cause any harm; however, it rarely does much to help with anxiety in my experience. A better option would be to talk to your veterinarian about prescription anti-anxiety medication such as alprazolam or trazodone - these medications are much more effective for anxious pets, and can be used as-needed for car rides or other situations that may cause stress :)

Gabapentin can cause sedation in some cats but not all. You can try a dose that your vet prescribed to see if it helps with a short car trip around the block. If it doesn't work, I would talk to your vet about a different medication, possibly alprazolam and also use Cerenia, which prevents nausea often associated with motion sickness in these kitties.
