Dog can't pee after bladder stone surgery. Should I get a second opinion?

I agree that it looks like Buddy has bladder and urethral stones. A diet might help to dissolve them, although the stones in his urethra are a bit more concerning and may not dissolve. He is at risk for urethral obstruction at any time which would be an emergency. Surgery to remove the stones might be another option. Hi and thanks for posting! It can take anywhere from 10-14 days or sometimes a little longer before the bladder can heal after surgery and regain normal stream of urine. It is not uncommon for there to be a shorter urine stream or for patients that have had bladder surgery to urinate more frequently than usual. This should subside in about 1-2 weeks.

It is likely that Charlie has new bladder stones. While this may not be urgent as long as he is able to urinate, I suggest you have him x-rayed again to see the size of the stones and whether they may be able to pass through the urethra.

It should resolve with time, but is worth discussing with her veterinarian. Some middle aged spayed female dogs will leak urine due to a lack of hormones. This is unrelated to bladder stones, but could be a contributing cause in her case. This condition is known as hormone responsive incontinence and can be asked about as well. The recurrence was very quick indeed. Sometimes such a fast recurrence is related to bacterial infection that is sitting deep in the bladder wall. For that reason we often test the stones for presence of bacteria, or we take a sample of the bladder wall to be tested for presence of infection. I assume that test was done, but if not it would be really worth to put Zucchini on a long course of antibiotics. In some dogs it does make a big difference in relation to recurrence of bladder stones.

He should be rechecked by your vet or at the local veterinary ER today. He may be painful or still feeling the aftereffects of general anesthesia. This can last as long as 72 hours. If his bladder is full, the doctors can insert a urinary catheter if necessary to empty it. Medications can be administered or dispensed to alleviate pain which may make him comfortable. Supportive care can also be administered. SQ fluids may rehydrate him and perk him up.

If Molly just had surgery today, she may still be feeling some of the effects of anesthesia, which can cause mild nausea and inappetence for 12-24 hours. If Molly's surgery was in the past few days, she may be painful, causing her inappetence. In this case, I recommend calling her vet to discuss her pain management options. If it has been longer than a few days after surgery, it seems unlikely that Molly's loss of appetite is directly related to the bladder stone removal unless there has been a recent diet change that she does not find palatable.
