Can I feed my dog canned food as a weekly treat? Is it safe for her?

Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Female | spayed | 5 years and 3 months old | 17 lbs

Can my dog have canned food once a week as a treat? It does have more protein, fat and fiber than her normal dry food. Is this ok? will she experience larger than normal stools from the canned food? Also the can is 6 oz and she normally eats 8 per day.. Is it ok that she would get 2 ounces less on one day. I'd rather not open up a new can for 2 ounces. She does get a weekly chew and treats which is a fair amount of calories so she's not getting underfed.

It should be fine to give her the canned food as a treat once a week as long as it doesn't cause any intestinal upset. The 2 ounce difference should not cause a problem but if she seems hungry then you could just add a little bit of the dry to the canned food. Monitor her weight and body score and adjust her feeding accordingly.

It depends on whether or not he is overweight. If he is overweight, I would stick with the occasional treat so once or twice a day. Another option would be to just give him canned green beans for treats. If he is a normal weight, you may be able to give him a little more. Just be aware of how much you are giving because treats are like small snickers bars for dogs and have a high caloric value per treat. I hope this helps!

You may want to add some kibble (dry complete dog food) to make up the remaining 60-70% of her ration. I do not think mashing up the vegetables will make a difference. Pate canned food has the same digestibility as any other good quality food. 10 to 15% extras in form of treats is ok provided you only feed 85 to 90% of dog food, ie , your total should be 100% of her daily ration . You can give her boiled carrots/ carrot pieces or green beans as treats.

What human foods are safe for my dog on a Royal Canin SO diet?

The key here is extreme moderation. If you give too much of something that is not formulated to be S/O friendly, you compromise the diet and then it doesn’t work. It should be fine to give Sadie a carrot stick or a couple sugar peas once a day. The absolute best majority of her intake should be either the diet or the urine friendly treats. Is hamburger meat safe for my dog to eat as an occasional treat?

Yes, that's fine. Most dogs tolerate beef well. If she vomits after eating it, or diarrhea is noted within three days, then she may not tolerate it well. This can happen either due to it being too rich, or a food allergy (not that common). This does have a fair amount of calories though, so I always reccomend you account for these types of treats by feeding a little less of their dog food. This will help prevent obesity, which is a common problem with dogs in the U.S. I hope that helps.

Can adult dogs eat wet food, or should I mix it with kibble?

Cesars and Beneful are more medium grade diets. Dogs love the taste but it's not necessarily the highest quality proteins and there's lot of fillers. The Royal Canin is a very high quality and the food I recommend to mainly feed Azumi.
