My dog has bumps. Are they ticks or a growth? How can I tell?

While hard to say without seeing her in person, this does not have the appearance of a tick and looks more like a small skin growth. Ticks are usually dark in color, black/brown/maroon and once full of blood can have a pale grey appearance.

It is difficult to know for sure without seeing it. I don't see a picture included so if you tried to upload a picture then it didn't work properly. With a tick, you can usually see some legs so if you don't see any legs then it could be a skin tag, especially since he seemed to be in pain when you tried to remove it. The best thing would be to have your vet take a look at it to determine the exact cause and treat. Continue to use a flea/tick prevention, like Frontline, NexGard, Bravecto, etc.

Without actually seeing the growth I cannot say what it is exactly. If it is a definitive growth the only way to say what the growth is, is through a biopsy. The pictures are too blurry and not close up enough for me to tell exactly what you are talking about. If they are ticks they will have legs if you look closely. If you see ticks you can remove them. If you are not sure how to do that you can watch YouTube videos on how to do it properly. Red mange (or demodecosis) is unlikely in a dog this age unless she is very immunocompromised or stressed. If she didn't have it as a puppy then she is unlikely to have it now. There is no way to tell if it is mange for sure without a deep skin scraping. I honestly think the most likely thing going on is a bacterial skin infection. If you are unsure of what is going on you can always take her to your vet for an exam. I don't think these are ticks from your photos. They look much more like skin cysts or growths that occur more often in older dogs. Don't attempt to remove them as if they are skin growths, you may cause your dog pain and they will bleed. Get Joey checked by your vet in the next 48hrs who will be able to determine what they are. If the type of growth is unclear, your vet may suggest a needle biopsy which is a non invasive way to determine the type of growth/ cells.

That looks more like a scab than a tick. Examine the area closely. If it's a tick, you will be able to see 8 tiny legs (4 on each side). If it's a scab, hair will be attached to the lesion. I can't really tell from the picture what it is. If you dog isn't on a flea or tick preventative, that could be part of the issue. Skin infection, sebaceous cyst, or other masses would be possible, as well. I would wait and see what happens. You can get her started on a flea preventative, and use a medicated shampoo like Dechra MalAcetic Ultra Shampoo for mild skin infections.
