What causes bumps, shedding, and bloody skin on my 6-month pitbull?

Unfortunately, we cannot pull up any previous questions so I can't see those. Pets can get many types of lumps and bumps. Most of these tumors will be benign but some will be malignant and you can't tell by looks. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing his diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. You can use medicated pet wipes once a day as it may help to condition the skin (don't get any solution in his eyes or ears). Protect the areas from scratching and he may need to wear and Elizabethan collar at all times. If the lesions don't start looking better within about a week or if they get worse, have him examined by the veterinarian who may prescribe medications or aspirate a mass if one is present. Pits may be prone to skin infections. Also, be advised that any masses that are changing or are reddish colored are suspicious for a skin cancer called Mast Cell tumor. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I think continuing the use of a medicated shampoo would be good as he likely has secondary infections. I think this could be due to allergies and it would be crucial to identify the allergic component to try to see if he can improve. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Poor Moyer! It could be hives or a skin infection. Pit's are prone to allergic reactions and allergies. You can start with a medicated shampoo, bathing 2 times per week leaving the lather on the affected areas for 10 minutes of contact before rinsing. You can also start an antihistamine in case it is hives. If there is no improvement in 1-2 weeks I would have her seen since it has already been a while. She may need oral antibiotics if it is a skin infection or steroids if it is hives. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It’s hard to tell from the pictures but it looks like there is a skin infection on Noheas head. An infection could cause bumps and hair loss. A common cause of skin infections in young pit bulls is mange (demodex). These are microscopic mites that don’t cause scratching. I recommend taking Nohea to a vet for a close exam of her skin. They will need to look at cells under the microscope to diagnose this. They can then get her medications to treat the infection and mites if needed. Good luck and kisses to Nohea!

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Poor Nova! Thanks for the pictures. Based on your description and the pictures Nova likely has a bacterial skin infection. Other possible causes are demodex (non-contagious mite) and ring worm. Skin infections are usually caused by allergies to food or the environment. Pit bulls are sadly allergic dogs. Nova ideally needs to see your Vet to confirm the skin infection and get oral antibiotics and medications to stop the scratching, You can discuss with your Vet food options and additional allergy testing and medications if her skin continues to be a problem. Based on the pictures, it appears that Ghost may have an allergic skin reaction or skin infection starting. I would recommend a topical approach and see if this helps. If there is no improvement, then I would recommend taking him to the veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. 1. Douxo PS Calm shampoo 2. Hydrocortisone spray by Well and Good at Petco and apply twice daily to the area 3. Miconahex + Triz spray and apply twice daily to the area

Ghost's skin definitely doesn't look normal. I would suspect an external parasite is the most likely cause. Fleas, scabies and demodex are all possibilities despite a negative skin scrape (sometimes you just don't get a diagnostic sample). I would recommend to put him on a product called NexGard for the next three months. This medication will take care of all three parasites. If Ghost does not respond to the treatment, then I would recommend a food trial with a hydrolyzed protein diet. It appears by the pictures that he may also have a secondary skin infection, take him into the veterinarian's office and to see if antibiotics and/or a medicated shampoo is warranted.
