My spayed puppy has a bump on her tummy after surgery. What is it?

Overall, Darla's incision certainly looks as though it has healed well. The suture material used under the skin can take several months to fully dissolve. In that time, some dogs may develop mild inflammatory responses. There is also a chance that Darla has developed a skin infection from other causes (most commonly underlying allergies). At this point, you can continue to monitor these bumps at home for changes. However, if they worsen or seem to cause irritation with licking or itching, Darla should go to her vet for further evaluation. If she is licking, keep an e-collar (cone) on Darla until you can take her to the vet to prevent further skin irritation. I hope this helps and that all goes well!

This is a pustule probably from a buried suture knot. The suture is absorbable but it takes several months to dissolve and sometimes the knot can cause irritation and a small infected pustule. I recommend taking Patti to your veterinarian and they can feel if there is suture left in the incision. It can be removed now that the incision is healed. Generally when the pustule is opened the knot is exposed and can be cut off and removed with suture scissors. Then the skin will be cleaned and it should heal up quickly once the knot is gone. It's a little difficult to tell in your picture - it doesn't appear to be raised. If it is a flat area of redness and hair loss it could be a hot spot or superficial bacterial infection. If it is raised it could be a skin growth like a histiocytoma. I would recommend having your vet examine this lesion to determine for certain what it is.

It looks like there could be some inflammation at the site of the incision. That could be due to her body breaking down the sutures, or she caused some sort of trauma to the area. If she is acting normal and you don't feel any swelling around that area I would wait and see if it improves. But if there is swelling, drainage, or pain I would worry about a dehiscence (opening of the incision) which would be an emergency and she should see a vet immediately.

This is probably due to a severe allergy, although it could also be fleas or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat Molly with a high quality flea treatment (e.g. Trifexis or Advantage), then get her to the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try discovering the cause of the allergy. Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair the skin lesions (steroids and antibiotics). simultaneously you should start her on a prescription hypoallergenic diet for at least 2 months. Hopefully you will see some results after all this, if not you and your vet should consider putting her on a long term allergy treatment (Atopica or Apoquel).

I'm wondering if the 'pimple' in the first picture is potentially part of her spay scar and a suture reaction if she was recently adopted and spayed. You may be able to feel some 'firm' tissue beneath this area if that is the case. It's also possible that this is a small skin mass that has become infected. Dogs can develop milia, but milia are most commonly seen when there is excess cortisol due to a disease like Cushing's. The milia do not typically require treatment but the underlying disease does. Cushing's is common in middle aged to older dogs and other signs include increased thirst, hunger and urination. I think it would be a good idea to have a veterinarian examine her skin to make sure treatment for an infection isn't necessary, and to discuss testing for Cushing's disease if she is showing any other signs.

It looks like a mild skin infection, possibly from the skin in that area staying moist and touching more than other areas on her body. Try keeping the area clean with a mild soap, making sure to completely remove any soap residue with a warm damp washcloth and apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment (without steroid, as steroids slow healing), rubbing it in well. Do this at least daily, and consider bathing her with an oatmeal based pet shampoo to soothe her skin overall. If this area doesn't improve significantly over the next few days, if it gets worse, spreads, if she starts itching or licking excessively, get her in to see your vet as this may be a sign of a an underlying problem that may need more extensive treatment.
