My dog has brown spots and a grey blister on her belly. What is it?

You can try to use a medicated shampoo containing chlorhexidine twice weekly for 2 weeks. I am sorry to hear about your dog Molly! There are several possibilities for the area you are describing. These could include a hypersensitivity reaction to an insect bite, a bacterial infection of the skin, a fungal infection of the skin (like ringworm), an allergic reaction to something in the environment. We can also have some skin tumors appear as ulcerative areas, though these are less common. The safest thing to do is to have your vet examine the area. They may recommend additional testing such as a ringworm culture or skin cytology , or may determine just by appearance what treatment is needed. In the meantime, if she is licking at the area, an e-collar can be placed to discourage this.

First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). Your puppy may have puppy impetigo which is a bacterial skin infection. Have your vet take a look at her to diagnose and treat. She may need an antibacterial shampoo and/or an oral antibiotic to treat.

Without a photo or examining her myself it is hard to say what is going on. I have two thoughts that came to mind after reading your post. One is that those spots could be post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation - basically the skin was inflamed maybe from the previous allergies and because of the inflammation the skin turns black. This should resolve and the skin will go back to normal. My other thought is that the spots could be actually bruising and we call those ecchymosis. This could be a serious problem even if she seems to be acting normal. This is a problem with the clotting cells called platelets (immune mediated thrombocytopenia). Of course, it could be something else entirely. Those are just my first thoughts. I suggest you get Kaya to your vet for an exam just to be safe. Hope this helps.

A common cause of darkened skin in these areas is from chronic inflammation, which could be caused by fleas, flea allergies, food allergies, bacterial or yeast infections, etc. I would recommend starting Cookie on a monthly flea preventative if she isn't already, and checking in with your vet to see what could be going on.

Judging from the picture you provided, I suspect that Baby may be dealing with a bacterial skin infection.
