Yes, there are certainly risks associated with sedating Rex. While age isn't a disease in and of itself, you mentioned that Rex has previously been diagnosed with metastatic (spread of cancer) melanoma. Existing disease processes raise the risk of sedation, which can include heart and blood pressure issues, or difficulty breaking down the drugs in the liver and/or kidneys. That said, I'd recommend having a conversation with Rex's vet regarding their previous exam findings, as well as the severity of his current skin infection. You'll need to weigh the risks and benefits of sedation vs. leaving this skin infection untreated. Your vet may recommend trying some different oral sedatives or anti-anxiety medications, which are often a bit safer than some injectable sedatives. Each ‘scary’ experience at the vet builds on the next, so if he is getting worked up on oral sedatives alone he needs more sedation. You could ask your vet about trying an oral sedative in addition to the gabapentin and you could also work on training him to use a basket muzzle for safety. You could also look for a hospital that specializes in ‘Fear Free’ handling techniques but I will tell you that these hospitals are usually pretty liberal with their use of injectable sedative because the outcomes are so much better fo the pets. The most humane way to euthanize a pet is with a veterinarian who can administer a sedative and a euthanasia solution to painlessly stop the heart. There are some veterinarians who can perform at-home euthanasias, which may be a good option for Bundas. While there are no sleeping pills for dogs, there are pills that can cause light sedation and a calming effect. I'm not sure what is available in Hungary, but I recommend asking your veterinarian about medications such as Trazodone, Gabapentin, Acepromazine or Melatonin. It seems that poor Bambi may have a heart condition. Not all murmurs are bad, but the cough can indicate signs of heart failure and an x-ray would tell a lot of information that would be helpful for getting the right diagnosis. It's always difficult to speculate without fully knowing Bambi's medical history, but I'm guessing that they did not want to anesthetize Bambi for the teeth cleaning because they were afraid that she had severe heart disease. For dental cleanings they need to fully anesthetize the dog and this can be risky with heart disease. Often there is a risk versus benefit decision that needs to be made. The doctor may have decided that the risk of anesthesia was not worth the benefit of a dental cleaning. For the x-ray, the sedation would not be as worrisome as the full anesthesia that is required for the dental. We have sedation drugs that are very safe for heart conditions and it's often less risky to sedate a heart patient for an x-ray rather than struggling with them to get them in the right position. Struggling too much can cause a heart attack in some patients with bad heat disease. I hope that helps to answer your question. I would contact the veterinarian again and ask if they can provide you with a sedative / anti-anxiety medication prior to coming in and then have you muzzle her prior to bringing her in. Medications such as Trazodone and amitriptyline together can help with the anxiety. She really needs to be seen by a veterinarian and have her blood tested to see if there are any abnormal systemic changes that could be causing the symptoms you are describing. It is important to remember that some dogs may always react aggressively and are at risk to hurt someone (which no one wants). Your veterinarian knows how to read pet's body language and must take into account the safety of everyone (the pet included). Some pets needs to be sedated and muzzled and there's no other way around it. If he is extremely aggressive while being groomed, you may want to consider having him sedated and groomed at your vet's office. This will mean that Marley is closely monitored during the sedation and supported with fluids and heat if necessary. Your vet can also perform a thorough exam, and ensure that Marley's heart and lungs are healthy enough to handle the sedation. At home, you can try calming chews available in most pet stores, and consider getting Marley a muzzle to keep yourself safe.
