How much does it cost to breed a dog, including vet care and stud?

Typically this is just a general health exam which ranges based on region anywhere from $45-$70 for mama pet and if you need the puppies examined as well this is an additional exam per puppy. Most places will also offer multiple pet exam discounts, especially for newborns. You can easily get an estimate for an exam from the veterinary hospital you have in mind by giving them a call and inquiring how much an exam costs. As long as your pet doesn't need any additional medications or treatment then this should be the extent of costs expected. Most places will also give an estimate if medications or anything are needed in addition to the exam.

You have plenty of time to worry about when to breed Bailey, as she shouldn't be bred until at least her second or third heat. As for tests, an over health check with the vet is best, checking her musculoskeletal systems, blood work and urinalysis, and chest x-rays to check her heart. If not, you can opt to have her spayed to abort the puppies and prevent her from being able to get pregnant again in the future. If you opt to let her have the puppies, it's normally recommended to feed puppy food during her pregnancy (it's higher in calories). She may also need to be dewormed. Toy breeds are always at a higher risk for needing an emergency c-section than larger dogs, so you should be prepared for this - if she does need a c-section, this can cost $1000-2000 depending on where you live. The puppies will also need to be dewormed and vaccinated before going to new homes at 8 weeks of age.

Things to think about are if Virguie's breed has any trouble giving birth naturally so you can be financially prepared for a surgical C-section. Record all breeding dates accurately. Discuss measuring Progesterone levels with your Vet to time breeding. Look in to whelping boxes and watch videos on whelping so you can help during birth with removing the placentas from the puppies faces and tying umbilical chords. Purchase a bulb syringe to remove mucous from the puppies noses. Virguie should be fed puppy food while pregnant and while nursing. At day 50 pregnant have your Vet take an X-ray of her bally to estimate the number of puppies to expect. Start measuring Virguie's rectal temperature daily around day 58 pregnant to watch for a temperature drop that indicates the start of labor. Always keep your Vet prepared so they can assist you if you have problems. Be prepared to financially deworm and vaccinate the puppies when they need it and to take care of any unexpected illnesses in the mother and with the puppies. I hope this helps!

Hi. Great questions. Puppies should begin vaccines at 8 weeks old. Then they need vaccines every 3-4 weeks until the puppy is 16-18 weeks. It is then once a year after that. They do need a physical exam with every shot, they need a fecal rest in the first visit, and to start heartworm prevention. I would not be surprised that it does get close to 100 dollars a visit during these boosters. The positive thing is its only once a year after that :) I don't think you are being taken advantage of. Just know that none of us go in to this field to take advantage of clients. I hope that helps. And if you do feel it's too expensive, you can shop around. Puppies can be seen on ultrasound around 28 days pregnant and on X-ray around 50 days. An ultrasound depends on your area. A full abdominal ultrasound in my area (east coast) is around $400 but may be cheaper if just checking for puppies. You would have to call around. Or you can wait until day 50 (from her being let outside) and have your Vet take an X-ray, which is probably only $100. Another option if you do not want puppies, is to have spayed immediately.
