How to get my dog's breed verified for apartment with no records?

Hello. It is sometimes pretty difficult to try & obtain information from a previous owner, so it is best just to start fresh with everything. A good physical exam, heartworm test, fecal exam & update all the vaccinations, even if some of these were previously done. Make sure they scan Max for a microchip in case this was done by his previous owners. As to his breed, you can always pick up one of the Witness canine DNA kits online or at the bigger pet retailers & see what it comes back as. In most cases, you'll need owner permission in order for records to be transferred over, so while you can contact the vet, you may not be able to obtain full records. That said, they may at least be able to confirm neuter/vaccine status for you so you can let your vet know. If you can't get any records, you can also have your current vet perform a titer test to see where Wooly's immunity levels are, and then booster vaccines from there.

The method of documenting mixed breeds is different for all clinics - there isn't necessarily one universal way of documenting this in the medical record, and clinics are often limited to the settings in their record system database, so I recommend calling your vet and explaining the situation. Some record systems allow an animal to be entered as two specific breeds (pomeranian x husky) while other systems require you to choose the primary breed and list it as a mix ("pomeranian mix" or "husky mix"). Some systems allow a manual addition of a breed, which could allow the record to say "pomsky" but many don't work that way. So - talk to your vet! Since your dog is a cross between two breeds, and the apartment staff said they'll respond differently if the dog is listed as a mixed breed, I would expect your vet can work with that. If you can’t get ahold of the original owner, then no there’s nothing a vet can do to verify Charlie has had his rabies vaccine. To be honest, if they are claiming they lost the records, I would assume he hadn’t gotten any vaccines at all. The vet who gives the vaccines keeps records, so the original owners could have contacted the vet to get their copy. I would advise getting Charlie his DHPPi as well as rabies. I hope this helps.

I assume by papers you mean his vaccine records. It’s ideal to have the vaccine records but in general it is not necessary. Getting tags for her will depend on where you live. In most municipalities a rabies vaccination is required. If you have no proof of a rabies vaccine, you will need to have a vaccination done by a veterinarian. You will need to check with your locality to find out if any other vaccinations are required for licensing. I would recommend calling the office of the city where you live to find out their requirements. You will not be able to register your dog with the AKC if that is what you mean by having "papers" for her, without proof of her parentage and their AKC registration.

What a cutie dog! That's ok if you don;t have any info. Just start all over again with vaccines, heartworm testing and heartworm prevention. You will not hurt him. Tell the vet his history to help make the best decision. Obviously you may try to find the people and ask them about his health history but if you can't reach them, it will be ok. I hope this helps.
