My dog is breathing shallow and fast, acting strange. Emergency?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Rottweiler | Male | neutered | 5 years and 8 months old

hello- my dog has been breathing shallow over for the past couple of hours, and was acting strange today. My husband thought maybe he hurt himself, but his resting breathing rate is about 60 breaths per minute. I am wondering if i need to take him to the emergency vet or if it is okay to wait until morning? What could this be from, if his breathing is shallow even when sleeping? He is a 5 year old, neuteured rottweiller.

This is a quite concerning presentation. Differentials are many including pain/discomfort (which has to be quite pronounced) and cardiac and respiratory diseases. It is anyway a presentation that usually requires an immediate check up, so I would recommend to take Sammy to your vet asap.
