My dog is breathing shallow and fast, acting strange. Emergency?

I see that Sammy is an older boy. I would be concerned that these signs could be due to something serious like heart disease. This can be common in older dogs. It could be a respiratory infection. I would take him into the vet first thing in the morning to get checked out. Best of luck.

If there are no other signs and you are not suspecting any intoxication you could monitor him at this stage for the next 2 hours and see if he settles down. If not a check up would be ideal to understand the underlying cause and treat appropriately. Unfortunately at this stage the presentation is quite generic and differentials are many.

Anytime a dog is in respiratory distress it is a medical emergency. Increases in respiratory rate, breathing fast, or difficult breathing are both medical al emergencies. There are many potential causes such as lung disease or parasites, problems with the structure of the airways , or heart conditions. I would advise taking Dollar to a vet immediately. I recommend that you have your dog examined by a veterinarian as soon as possible. A dog at rest takes about 10 to 30 breaths per minutes. Breathing at a faster rate may indicate fever, pain, anxiety, or a problem with the lungs or chest. Rapid, labored breathing is indicative of congestive heart failure and/or lung disease, shock, heat stroke, dehydration, and ketoacidosis associated with diabetes, kidney failure, and some tyes of poisonings.

Oh no, poor Sammy! This panting could be caused by being too hot, cardiac disease, respiratory disease, respiratory distress, or pain. Given that Sammy has been panting for a long time, I would recommend having him seen by a vet right away. The vet can diagnose what is causing his panting and can treat him for it.
