Did my dog with a brain tumor suffer or die alone when she passed?

Hi, I am sorry to hear that Mary passed away so suddenly. It must have been a real shock for you. I think the fluid you noticed is inflammatory fluid coming from the chest because of the presence of cancer. This is secondary to the presence of the tumour, sadly can’t be treated and does aggravate the breathing itself. I hope Mary did not suffer. Thinking about you at this difficult time.

I'm sorry to hear about Hurley's passing - she sounds like a wonderful dog. From what you describe, I would agree that lymphoma or a similar type of cancer is the most likely diagnosis. There are no toxins that would cause dramatic lymph node enlargement like what you're describing here, so the substance she ate on the beach was likely not related. And unfortunately yes, dogs with aggressive types of cancer can get very sick and go downhill very quickly from the time they first start to show obvious symptoms. So I would agree with your veterinarian that this is almost certainly what happened in your girl's case. It sounds like euthanasia was the right decision for her, although I know that definitely don't make it any easier. Again, I'm very sorry for your loss.

I'm so sorry to hear about your dog's passing! Hemangiosarcoma is a nasty disease. Please don't blame yourself, as there is no way you could have known she had it - many dogs are acting completely normal and have normal physical exam findings, right up until the tumor ruptures and bleeds. Her heart murmur was entirely unrelated to the hemangiosarcoma, so even if you had taken her back in for her recheck visit, it's very unlikely that the tumor would have been found at that time. Abdominal x-rays and ultrasound is usually needed to diagnose it, and neither of these tests would have been indicated for her heart murmur. So rest assured, this was not your fault in any way. Again, I'm very sorry for your loss.

Without seeing her in person, I cannot say for certain, but if she was in a coma, then I would suspect she didn't feel anything. Please look after yourself and take the time to grieve her passing. Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I'm so sorry to hear that your veterinarian suspects that Sky has a brain tumor. There are some clinical signs/neurologic abnormalities that can increase suspicion for a brain tumor, such as abnormal behavior, circling when walking, seeming blind or staring off into space, seizures, etc. Advanced imaging such as a CT scan or an MRI would be the way to definitively diagnose a brain tumor. Prednisone is a common steroid medication with anti-inflammatory properties that can help decrease some of these clinical signs and make dogs feel better. Making the decision to euthanize a pet is never easy, and I'm sorry that you are faced with this right now. If Sky is improving, it is not wrong to delay her euthanasia. I recommend thinking about Sky's ability to do things she normally enjoys, and if she is still able to do a lot of those things, maybe it isn't time to euthanize just yet. Your vet did the right thing. I'm so sorry Pich passed away but I do not believe your daughter had anything to do with it. She did not cause the dog to have a tumor. You also need to not place blame on the veterinarian. They did the best they could to help. Unfortunately, not everything turns out the way we hoped despite the best treatment. The dog had a history of seizures which were probably caused by the underlying tumor. There is no way for anyone to have known that. I know it is heartbreaking but you all need to stop blaming yourselves. It is a living animal and, just like a person, things happen out of our control. I really thing you and your family should speak to a grief counselor.
