My dog has bloody stool, vomiting, and won't eat. Should I go to ER?

Blood in the stool, even if it seems to "go away" and come back later, is never normal. The fact that it's accompanied by diarrhea suggests colitis, or inflammation of the colon, as opposed to some type of bleeding mass in the rectum or colon. Colitis can have a number of causes, including dietary indiscretion (eating something rotten or non-food), parasites, food allergies/food sensitivities, inflammatory bowel disease, or infection. Leah may improve with a diet change, perhaps a more digestible diet specifically for gastrointestinal problems. To assume it's a "tummy issue" could be to ignore causes that are treatable, and at this point she's not only having diarrhea but she also lost her appetite. It's been three days and she's not improving, so I recommend having her seen by her vet for labwork to include parasite testing, blood work, and urinalysis for starters. If all is normal consider a bland diet (as recommended above), and a probiotic supplement. Ultimately, she may need to have biopsies taken to diagnose the exact cause.

It's best to take him to the ER, but it's possible that this can wait until tomorrow morning. Poor Martin! I'm sorry to hear that he's sick. Vomiting can be caused by lots of different things. Some, like a mild upset stomach or eating something that didn't agree with him, are quite minor. Other possible causes are more serious, such as an intestinal obstruction, pancreatitis, ingestion of something toxic, or even parvo if Martin isn't fully vaccinated. To help determine how urgent the problem is, I usually judge this based on how the dog is acting otherwise. If Martin is still active and playful, interested in food and treats, and not having any other issues, then I would not consider this to be an emergency - in that case, you could opt to withhold food for the rest of the day today to give his stomach a chance to settle, then offer a small bland meal of plain boiled chicken and white rice this evening. Then, you can take him to your vet appointment tomorrow morning as planned. On the other hand, if he's acting depressed or lethargic, or isn't wanting to eat anything, I would be more concerned that something more serious may be wrong. In that case, it would be better to take him to an emergency vet today rather than waiting until tomorrow.

It seems as Scooby is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking him to the vet the first chance you get, he will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection he will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better. if the vet thinks it is more serious he will need a blood test and possibly an ultrasound in order to find out what is wrong.

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Daisy. Contact your local rescue groups, humane societies, low-cost clinics in your area and seek help. Persistent vomiting, bloody diarrhea and lack of appetite are emergent clinic signs due to fluid/electrolyte losses. This leads to dehydration, weakness, and further downward deterioration unless the vomiting stops and the appetite returns. I would advise taking Daisy to your vet as soon as possible to have her evaluated. Many causes are possible including intestinal parasites, dietary indiscretion (eating things dogs aren't supposed to), other dietary problems, gastrointestinal inflammation/infection from various sources, toxin exposure, foreign body ingestion, GI ulceration, side effects from drugs or products used, or even problems outside of the gut including pancreatitis, liver/kidney problems, among many others. Your vet can get a detailed history and perform a thorough exam. Once done, a diagnostic plan and preliminary treatment plan can be started. Most likely a minimum database of fecal/blood/urine tests and some x-rays will be advised. Treatment will be focused on the cause but early treatment could include fluids/electrolytes, anti-nausea/vomiting medicines, acid blockers, etc. Good luck with Daisy.

I'm sorry Cracker isn't doing well at all! When a dog has been having diarrhea for more than 24 hours, it is time to see the vet; that being said, because she is eating and drinking as well as behaving normally, it can wait until the morning. Keep an eye on Cracker tonight, and if she starts vomiting again, continues to have bloody diarrhea, stops eating, and/or becomes very lethargic, then I would have her seen by an ER vet. Bloody vomitus is concerning. It can indicate a gastric ulcer or a very inflamed stomach wall. Since she has just had the one episode you can keep an eye on her for now. However, if the bloody vomit continues (like more than 3 times tonight), then I would recommend taking her to the ER. Do not feed her any more tonight and let her have small amounts of water if she can keep it down. If she is not back to herself in the next 24 hours then I would recommend taking her in to your regular vet tomorrow to be checked out.
