My dog had bloody diarrhea. How long should he stay on I/D food?

I typically recommend feeding a bland diet (ie the beef and rice) for about 48 hours after the symptoms have resolved. After this point, you can reintroduce her original diet. Be sure not to give treats, dental chews, or other food human as you want to make things easy on her gastrointestinal tract. If her symptoms recur when she is back on her original diet, you can offer the beef and rice for 24 hours. If this does not resolve the issue or she has blood in her stool again, then she will need to see her veterinarian again. I hope this information helps!

A biopsy for a diagnoses. persistent diarrhea can be a sign of cancer or inflammatory bowel or a food allergy You can feed boiled chicken and rice or continue with the I/D, I know it is expensive but it does help. You can also try a hypoallergenic diet such as royal canine rabbit and potato. The goal of a hypoallergenic diet is a single protein and single carb to not make their GI track work as hard and decrease allergies You should also add a probiotic to the diet as this will help return normal bacteria population to the gut Sometimes a low dose of cortisone can help get rid of inflammation to help also

Hello, sorry to hear about Ronan. Yes, you should continue a bland diet for 3-5 days total. If his diarrhea is not improving, or if he develops blood in his diarrhea then he should be seen by a veterinarian as anti-diarrhea medications may be recommended. Common causes of this is often some form of dietary indiscretion but other causes may include a parasitic infection or inflammation of his GI tract. It is ok to stay on the Hill's diet long-term if that is all that Orcan needs to prevent diarrhea. If you want him on another diet, you can slowly mix the two over 3-4 weeks. The first week it would be 75% Hills and 25% RC. The next week 50/50, etc. If the diarrhea comes back you can try a different RC diet for sensitive stomachs, continue feeding just the Hill's, or discuss food allergies or other possible causes for diarrhea with your vet.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If the diarrhea only comes back when you start adding the Purina One Smart Blend in to the i/d then I would change foods. It sounds as though she has developed a sensitivity to that food or the protein in the food. If the Purina is chicken based try to get a formula with out chicken. Otherwise be sure you check a fecal and even consider deworming her (even if sample is negative), run general blood work to be sure nothing systemic is going on. Hill's i/d is a balanced diet and can be fed long term, worse case scenario. Personally I think it might be the Purina One formula, so I would try a different brand or different Purina one protein source. I hope this helps and I wish Maci the best!

The diarrhea could be irritating Odin's GI tract, leading to the bleeding. The bland diet of chicken and rice is a good idea. Feed it in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, there is still blood in his feces on the bland diet, he starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.
