My dog has bloody diarrhea and chewed a cord. Should I worry?

I am very sorry to hear about Luna! Diarrhea with blood is a concerning symptom and veterinary care is recommended in these cases. We can have a variety of causes depending on the dog's age and history including parvovirus, gastrointestinal parasites (worms/coccidia/giardia), hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, bacterial infections, dietary sensitivities and more. I would recommend making an appointment for Luna to be examined ASAP to help determine what is causing her symptoms and how best to treat her!

This falls into one of these categories since you say that he isn't acting sick- Any clinical sign (diarrhea) that persists, worsens, or other signs develop (nausea, vomiting, lethargy, etc) this indicates that Colby should be seen by your veterinarian to assess what is going on. So I would just monitor his stools over the next 6-12 hours and watch for other signs. If things worsen, signs persist, or new signs develop, take him in immediately and let your vet take a detailed history and do a physical exam. They may advise some tests which could include fecal/blood tests, x-rays, etc to determine if a problem is present. A treatment plan can be made once a cause is determined or suspected. Bloody diarrhea can be caused by many things including intestinal worms, dietary problems, dietary indiscretion (eating things a dog should not eat), exposure to a toxin by ingestion, infection, etc. Good luck with Colby.

The diarrhea could be irritating Odin's GI tract, leading to the bleeding. The bland diet of chicken and rice is a good idea. Feed it in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, there is still blood in his feces on the bland diet, he starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. Hello. This all depends on how Luna is feeling & doing otherwise. If she is eating & drinking & acting normal, you can try just fasting her for the next 8-12 hours, & then feeding her a bland diet consisting of cooked white meat chicken & plain boiled whole grain rice ( not instant or minute rice ). Feed her a couple of teaspoons every few hours & see how she does. If the diarrhea should worsen, contain more blood, or Luna starts vomiting, please see a veterinarian as soon as possible. Hi and thanks for your request regarding Chewy's problem. These signs could be compatible with a colitis, which is an inflammation of the last part of the intestine, the colon, usually related to dietary indiscretion. As a first approach, I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. A probiotic would help as well to speed up the recovery and re-establish normal bacterial flora. Pro-kolin could be a good option. I would definitely recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. This blood in his diarrhea could be due to intestinal worms, eating something rotten, a foreign body, parvo if he isn't vaccinated, or a severe stomach illness. He should definitely see a vet for this. As long as he is otherwise ok, it can wait until the morning. If he starts vomiting, has more bloody diarrhea, is very lethargic, stops drinking water, or is vomiting water, take him into an ER vet immediately. I hope this helps!

Cooked bones can cause a problem for dogs in a number of ways. If Chip broke the bone while eating it, it could splinter and cause problems in the GI tract. Bones can also get stuck in the GI tract. The fat can also cause vomiting and diarrhea. Diarrhea that continues for more than a few days, or is associated with blood in the stool, vomiting, lethargy or a poor appetite is a reason for a visit to your veterinarian. Since Chip has blood throughout his stool, I would recommend a visit to the vet. In the meantime, if he is eating and drinking normally, we will often recommend a bland easily digested diet consisting of ½ cooked white rice and ½ cooked white meat chicken (boiled without any skin or bones). If he does well with a bland diet and his diarrhea resolves, then you can slowly transition back to his normal diet over a few days.
