My dog has a blood clot on its paw. What can I do until the vet?

Hi there. So sorry this happened. It sounds like you did everything correctly. I suggest you don't change the bandage too much as you are likely to disrupt the blood clot by doing so causing it to bleed again. If you have a good bandage on then I would leave it. Just make sure it is not too tight. Be sure to keep Lancelot very calm and quiet. Too much moving around can also cause more bleeding. If she will let you, you can ice the wound through the bandage for 10 minutes tonight and then again tomorrow morning. That will help reduce bleeding and swelling. Place an e-collar (cone) on Pardi to prevent licking. Gently clean with a dilute chlorhexidine solution. You can apply a non stick pad and bandage lightly, but you will need to change the bandage when it becomes moist or dirty. There are no OC medications you can safely give for pain management. See your veterinarian as soon as you are able.

Hello, until you can seek veterinary attention, you can soak Pablo's foot in warm water while gently massaging the foot. This will hopefully stimulate blood flow & prevent further tissue damage. But please consider having your veterinarian look at things soon. Take care.

The swelling will likely go down with some time. You can also massage it to get the blood moving better. I would put a cone collar on her to prevent her from licking if she is still messing with it. If the swelling isn't improving in a few hours, I would have your vet take a look at her to ensure there isn't an infection causing the swelling. I hope this helps!

Soak it in soap and warm water to keep it clean. Once it is dry you can place medicated powder in between the toes to help minimize moisture to dry it out. You can place neosporin around the nail bed also. If this does not help then you will need to see a vet

If there is no active bleeding and he isn't extremely painful, then he can likely wait until later today. Waiting until tomorrow would not be recommended. Place an e-collar (cone) on Rufus to prevent licking. Crate him or restrict activity until he sees the vet. Do not give him anything for pain until you speak with your vet. Many OTC pain medications can be toxic to dogs.

Poor Gizmo! That looks really sore. The lesion in the picture could be an abscess, a very large interdigital cyst or a tumor. I would recommend that you have Gizmo seen by your veterinarian. They may recommend a fine needle aspirate of the lesion to get a better idea of what is causing the swelling. Surgery may be required to lance and drain the abscess or remove a mass if present.
