My dog's stomach is bloated and she has diarrhea. What should I do?

Poor Amaya! If she is still continuing to get ill, I would seek out veterinary care in person ASAP as it is possible she is experiencing severe GI upset or got into something potentially harmful. If she has since settled down and stopped having vomiting or diarrhea episodes, and it's been several hours, you can attempt a bland meal of boiled rice and chicken to help settle her stomach for a few days, and then transition back to her regular food. However if she continues to vomit or have diarrhea, has blood in any of it, a painful abdomen, or her symptoms worsen or new ones appear, a veterinary visit ASAP is needed.

Hello, sorry to hear about Anya. Most GI sings of diarrhea may resolve with a bland diet of plain white rice, skinless and boneless chicken, and low fat cottage cheese. However, other more severe causes of this such as liver or kidney disease, inflammation of the bowel, and ingestion of foreign material may will require that your veterinarian examine Anya. If she develops persistent vomiting or diarrhea then I would recommend having her evaluated by her primary care veterinarian as she may need bloodwork and x-rays to be prescribed the adequate medications. In the interim, monitor her for persistent vomiting (more than 3 episodes in 1 day), diarrhea with blood, severe lethargy, or loss of appetite and contact your veterinarian if you note any. Hello, I am sorry for your concerns for Mochi. We often recommend pumpkin to add more bulk or fiber to the diet, so I do not think it will help much in this case. You can try giving her some famotidine ( Pepcid ), 5 mg every 12 hours for a few days to see if this does not settle things down. Keep her on the bland diet of boiled chicken & white rice ( 25% chicken, 75% rice ), or a little low fat cottage cheese for a few more days, as well. Feed small, but frequent meals. Adding a probiotic cannot hurt. I like Proviable or Forti Flora. If she does not straighten out in a short time, or she starts vomiting, please see your veterinarian as soon as possible. Thank you.

Causes of diarrhea can be from: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion (ate something gross), new treats/dog food/table food, toxin ingestion, food allergy/intolerance. If Rosebud is fully vaccinated and has been thoroughly dewormed and has had stool samples checked then I would with hold food for 12-24 hours. Do not take away water unless vomiting. After the fast offer a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 normal stools. If she continues to not eat or starts to vomit, she needs to see your Vet. I hope this helps and I wish Rosebud a speedy recovery!

If you have recently switched his food or added in a new treat it could be dietary indiscretion causing this. If this were the case, I would withhold food for 12 hours and introduce a bland diet as outlined below. If, however, there has been no recent switch to his food and he has been on the same thing his whole life this is likely something else. My recommendation would be to have a veterinarian take a look at him and run some testing such as blood work to see if there are any concerning changes that need to be addressed. If you are concerned about money, then you can start the bland diet as outlined below but if the vomiting and lethargy persist for more than 24 hours I would strongly recommend he be seen by a vet. CareCredit is a good option to look into. This option will allow you to put Veterinary expenses on a line of credit specifically for that purpose and you will pay Care Credit on a monthly basis. I would call and check to see if the vet clinic accepts Care Credit First. If he is one that choose toys and things that he shouldn't, then there is a chance this could also be a intestinal foreign body obstruction. I hope this helps! It is low in fiber, fat and protein and is high in carbohydrates. Bland diets are generally composed of a single carbohydrate source and a single lean protein source. The most common bland diet is boiled rice and boiled lean chicken breast, without skin and bones. Since bland diets are low in fiber, stool production slows and defecation is less frequent. Bland diets are fed to rest the gastric system and to help promote normal stool formation. Animals that are physically sick should not be fed bland diets as a method of treatment. PRIOR TO FEEDING A BLAND DIET Pets should be fasted for 12 to 24 hours. Young animals should not be fasted for more than 12 hours. Fasting will allow the intestinal system to relax and minimize acid secretions that may irritate and inflame the intestinal lining. During the fast small amounts of water or ice chips may be provided. Never fast a sick animal, it may cause disease progression and death. BASIC BOILED RICE AND CHICKEN BLAND DIET RECIPE CARBOHYDRATE SOURCE: Boiled white rice LEAN PROTEIN SOURCE: Chicken breast, no skin and bones BOILED RICE: 1 part white rice with 3 parts water boiled for 20 – 25 minutes or until the rice is easily crushed. Poor Ashley! Diarrhea and vomiting could be caused by parasites, change in diet toxin ingestion, infectious diseases, blockage in the intestines caused by ingestion of a foreign body, or a mass/growth in the gastrointestinal tract. Based on what she threw up, I'm concerned that there may be more string/ toy stuffing causing a blockage in Ashley's gastrointestinal tract. It is important that you have Ashley seen by a veterinarian immediately to help determine the cause of the symptoms, as if there is a blockage it could be life threatening, and she may need surgery to resolve it. Your vet may want to check her bloodwork and take x-rays to help determine what is going on with Ashley and to start appropriate treatment.

It appears that Bebe is having some form of gastrointestinal irritation. This can definitely make a dog feel nauseous and stop eating. Diarrhea is a common problem and is usually self-limiting (will go away on its own). It may not be serious right now, but it's always possible that it could be the start of something serious. If Bebe has any of the following, then she should see a vet: 1) Blood in diarrhea 2) Very watery diarrhea 3) Starts acting very depressed 4) Stops eating or drinking for longer than 24 hours. 5) Diarrhea lasts longer than three days. You can help her get through this by feeding bland food (boneless chicken and rice is good). Feed small portions three times a day. You can also add probiotics to the food (can get this at the pet store), which has demonstrated some efficacy for improving diarrhea. Ensure fresh, clean water is always available.
