My dog looks bloated. Is gas medicine safe, or should I see a vet?

It definitely does look bloated. It could be from eating a large meal or from intestinal parasites (worms). I would have your vet take a look a him. They will likely want to do a fecal on him to check for worms and if needed, they will deworm him. I hope this helps!

I personally would return for an x-ray and/or ultrasound. Bloating like that is not normal. I'm glad it is not a GDV but there could be an abdominal mass or an enlarged organ (spleen, liver) that may be pushing the side of the abdomen out. They are often not overly ill with an abdominal mass unless it gets to the point of pushing on the stomach or colon causing discomfort and pain. It is better to be safe than sorry. If this was just gas it should have subsided by now on it's own. If you don't want to take him back that is completely up to you. All you can do then is just monitor him for any worsening signs.

As long as she is acting ok you could monitor her for additional signs. If she starts retching, seems uncomfortable, starts drooling, is painful, or the distension persists then she should be examined by a vet. Your vet can take an X-ray to evaluate her abdomen and determine the exact cause of her problem.

Hello. I am concerned that with a bloated stomach & walking stiff, he is in some discomfort. If he is not retching, trying to vomit, breathing fast or hard, & his gums are moist & pink, then he may just be very gassy. You can give him a 5 mg dose of Pepcid ( famotidine), & see if this helps in an hour or so. But if he is no better, or he begins to show increased signs of distress, you may need to get him to a veterinary ER. If he seems relieved of the bloating, though, then repeat the Pepcid in 12 hours. Hello. I am sorry Bruno isn't feeling well. Gas in dogs results in a sore painful belly, not wanting to eat, and low energy. Gas should resolve within a day, if the problem is continuing then Bruno should be seen by a vet. X-rays can show what is happening. If gas is reoccurring frequently then you can try changing the food. The mediaction you were given is ok for one or two uses however repeated uses of sorbitol can cause electrolyte changes. Discuss with your vet about options for Bruno. Good luck with him!

Since we haven't seen him in person and actually examined him, we can't recommend a particular medicine to use, but your vet should be able to recommend the appropriate one for him and his size. You can also try gently massaging his belly to move the gas around. For the future you should consider placing him on an easily digestible food such Iams limited ingredient or the Innova (Evo) brand for sensitive stomach. However, I am a little suspicious that this may not be all that is going on with him, especially if he is as painful as you describe or doesn't respond to the anti-gas therapy. It may be beneficial to have the vet take another look at him to ensure there is nothing else going on there. I hope Rocky feels better soon.

I would recommend that you have Bella examined by a vet. While stress at home can certainly cause problems, it does not often cause bloating in dogs. Bloating could be a sign of a serious medical condition, such as fluid building up in the abdomen, organ enlargement, excess gas in the intestines, etc. A vet will do a thorough examination and may recommend diagnostic testing, such as blood work or x-rays to determine the problem.
