My old dog has bleeding skin growths and won't stop licking. Euthanasia?

This could be just an infection though I am suspicious that there is a growth underneath causing this. There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. This is severe and no home remedies are expected to improve this. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Good luck and have a good night!

The pictures look like benign warts, but It is always a good idea to have your vet examine any masses on M. In general, if a wart is bleeding it is worth considering removing it, so it would be worth discussing that with your vet as well. However, we often do not remove warts if they are not causing a problem. I'm sorry to hear that Lilly is having this issue. Unfortunately. there is nothing you can do about an oral tumor at home. You are correct, you cannot keep her from licking or biting the tumor and there is nothing you can apply to it to stop the bleeding. It is best to consider euthanizing her sooner rather than later. I'm sure this is really bothering her and I'm sure you don't want her last days to be filled with this uncomfortable tumor and wearing and annoying cone. At the end of the day you have to do what is best for her. Again, I'm very sorry. I know this is not a decision anyone wants to make for their pet.

Even if your veterinarian has determined that this is a benign growth, you could consider removal from a palliative standpoint just to avoid further self-trauma of it. You could consider removal of any of the nodules that seem to be bothering Patch. Good luck!

This is concerning, as this could be a sign of either an infection due to the licking or a tumor spreading out over her abdomen. You will need to take Tasha to a vet for an exam. Tasha will need to wear an e-collar to prevent her from licking and she will need to get prescription antibiotics if it is a bacterial skin infection. In case of a tumor, your vet may decide to take a biopsy to send in to pathology or decide to schedule surgery ASAP to remove it. Tumors are not always lumps, they can also appear just as a thickening of the skin.

Please be advised that to prevent this from happening to future pets, they need to be spayed before their first heat cycle. The chance of getting mammary tumors is virtually zero when a female dog is spayed young. It is very difficult for me to tell the orientation of what is going on in this photo. I'm assuming the photo is of the abdomen since you said they are mammary tumors but again, it is hard to tell what is going on based on this one photo. You are not going to get these to clear up and will likely only get worse; they are malignant cancer. They will only stop weeping when she stops scratching them. All you can do is exactly what you are doing although I don't think you should blow dry them - it is very easy to burn the skin making it worse. Everything else you are doing is fine. I'm not sure what you are using to cover her but I suggest a recovery suit and to put a feminine maxi pad between the skin lesions and the suit to catch any discharge. This protective layer should stop her from traumatizing the area. You can also put a human baby sock on her back feet so it covers the nails so if she does scratch she cannot hurt the area. Poor girl. Because this mass is open and seems to be bothering her I would highly consider having this mass removed surgically. Sometimes if the mass is small (less than 2 cm's) we can do a sedative on the pet and quickly remove these. However if it is a larger mass then general anesthesia may be required. She also needs to be placed on oral antibiotics to keep this area from getting infected and daily cleaning of the mass as well. Sterile saline flushes can help keep this area relatively clean and then an e-collar placed on her can help prevent licking. If surgery isn't an option for you, then medical management with antibiotics, e-collar and regular cleanings may allow proper healing of the area, but in most cases surgical removal is the best option.
